BWW Blog: Libby Servais of Transcendence Theatre Company's 'Broadway Under the Stars' - Gala Celebration Week
by Guest Blogger: Libby Servais - Sep 2, 2014

As usual, this past week with the Transcendence Theatre Company has been yet another vivaciously exuberant one. Once again, we connected with tremendous sold out and full of life, audiences...but our final performance of "Music of the Night" was unlike any performance I've ever been a part of. Here in Sonoma, California, we had an intense earthquake (6.2 rating) at 3:23 A.M. on August 24th (the early morning of that show). This was the first earthquake I've ever experienced and it truly shook me to the core. In fact, I've never been so deeply terrified in my twenty some years of life. Our entire house was rocking back and forth, paintings were falling off the walls, large bookshelves were tipping over and of course the power went out. The only light I could see came from the terrifying explosions of electrical boxes bursting outside my bedroom windows. I could feel my heart racing and literally thumping out of my chest. The earthquake only lasted about 45 seconds but felt like 45 hours to me. In that short amount of time, I actually saw my entire life flash before me. In tears, I sat trembling and adrenalized, clutching my dog child, Pearl and boyfriend Stephan Stubbins and I realized how we cannot take a single moment on this Earth for granted. Life is so precious. (more...)

BWW Reviews: NOLI ME TANGERE OPERA Manila
by BWW News Desk - Sep 14, 2014

So how do you sell a show that was conceived and first staged more than 50 years ago--an opera at that --to a younger audience who probably haven't even heard of Verdi, Puccini, or Maria Callas? The much-awaited return of the Filipino stage classic seems to be tackling just that. (more...)

Focus: Fiber 2014, a National Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary Fiber Art Opens, 9/26
by BWW News Desk - Sep 10, 2014

Focus: Fiber 2014, a biennial exhibition of contemporary fiber art, will open on Friday, September 26, from 7:00 -10:00 pm and will be on view through January 18, 2015 in the Bacon Gallery at the Erie Art Museum. The opening reception will feature the presentation of artist awards. The reception is free and open to the public. Presented by the Textile Art Alliance (TAA), an affiliate group of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Focus: Fiber 2014 features tapestry, embroidery, quilts, basketry, weaving, and sculpture by American artists. Juror Paola Morsiani, director of the Neuberger Museum at the State University of New York at Purchase, and former curator of contemporary art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, was charged with selecting the best work in fiber and/or fiber techniques from the pool of entries from 26 states. Personal narratives, social and political statements, representational imagery and purely abstract compositions are included. The artists chose equally diverse fiber techniques to execute and express their singular visions. Morsiani has put together a thoughtful show that celebrates fiber art in the 21st century. In her juror's statement, she writes, 'As a curator of contemporary art, I see all artists integrating textile media in their work seamlessly and creatively... [This exhibition] offers a rare opportunity to delve into the rich variety of inventions and interpretations of age-old techniques by artists skilled in these traditions and investing in expanding practices and expressions... The results expand our perspectives on our times, placing these works strongly at the intersection of life, art, and innovation.' Prize winners include Kathryn Shinko's Dirty Sampler series, which ponders our dependence on social media; Mary Michael's Seascape, a quilt that invokes transformations and Transcendence; Michael Radyk's Swan Print, in which the artist weaves with recycled materials; Susie Taylor's Pearl, an innovative weaving that includes origami as an integral part of the weave structure; and Judy Rush's Portrait of the Middle Child, a commentary on interactions with adult children. Textile Art Alliance is an active organization of artists, designers, educators and collectors with a common interest in the textile and fiber arts. Formed in 1934, TAA takes as its purpose the promotion of fiber arts through exhibition, educational programs and purchases to enlarge the textile collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. TAA has mounted an exhibition of members' work since 1936. In 1967 it became a juried show. In 1970 a decision was made to restrict the show to fiber art. The show expanded to a regional juried show in 1977 and to a national show with this exhibition. JPGS available upon request. A full color catalog of the exhibition will be available. Museum hours are Tuesday - Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Closed on Mondays. Museum admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students/seniors. Free admission is every Wednesday and the second Sunday of each month. Erie Art Museum is located at 411 State Street, Erie, PA, (enter on 20 East 5th Street) (814) 459-5477, erieartmuseum.org. BWW Blog: Libby Servais of Transcendence Theatre Company's 'Broadway Under the Stars' - WITNESS UGANDA and Community Events
by Guest Blogger: Libby Servais - Aug 22, 2014

Along with the wonderful Broadway Under the Stars concerts that we have at TTC, we also had a tremendous week of other special events including our third Guest Artist concert, Inspiration Initiative Day and our final Skits Under the Stars night. All of these events happened on our days off from the Music of the Night concerts and I feel tremendously inspired by it all. Looking at my calendar this past week made me slightly nervous that I wouldn't have enough time to fit everything in but actually it was all accomplished and enjoyed at the same time. For me, this was an excellent reminder that we are all capable of taking on SO much more than our minds might normally think. BWW Blog: Libby Servais of Transcendence Theatre Company's 'Broadway Under the Stars' - Music of the Night
by Guest Blogger: Libby Servais - Aug 21, 2014

After Ben Vereen's legendary show here at Transcendence Theatre Company, we TTC artists are continuously reflecting on the cherished wisdom and inspiration that Ben has left deeply rooted into our hearts. One moment in particular that I continue to think about is when I asked Ben if he was excited for his show and he replied with a gigantic grin and both hands in the air, 'I wake up excited! Everyday!' I also surrendered my hands into the air and said 'Me too!' And then I realized that I was standing outside a vineyard of grapes, giggling with Ben Vereen about how we must live each day to the fullest... Later he also shared with our company, 'Don't knock em' dead. They're already dead, knock em' into life!' Those epic words will stick with me forever. Basically, when I grow up, I want to be like Ben Vereen! (more...)

BWW Reviews: CABARET Sizzles and Sears in Mad Horse Theatre-Razer Entertainment's Production
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Aug 18, 2014

The new production of Cabaret mounted by South Portland's Mad Horse Theatre together with Razer Entertainment, sizzles with tension and sears with emotion. The dark, edgy Kander-Ebb musical presented in this intimate space allows the audience identification in a manner so powerful as to make one feel he is seeing the work for the first time. Following on the heels of the hugely successful Grey Gardens, director-choreographer Raymond Marc (Ray) Dumont and the Mad Horse company have ventured for the second time this summer into musical theatre, and the results are stunning! Not only is it refreshing to hear a musical unmiked, but the fifty-seat black box allows for an experience that is up close, personal, and unsparingly gripping. (more...)
