How is it late August already? Kids have already had their first day of school and we have closed our third concert, 'Rhythm of Life'! That is BANANA BOATS! (Cansler speak for nuts!) The community here in Sonoma Valley went nuts for this show. It was a variety show that surprised you with every number. One minute you had a sexy fosse style number, then a lyrical dance to 'Fields of Gold' (danced and choreographed by Amanda Lehmen and Dylan Smith and such by Leslie MacDonnel and Stephen Stubbins)...oh, and can we talk about the fact that I have always thought it was among the fields of BALI??? Barley makes so much more sense. Great job, Meggie! That got the ladies dressing room laughing... There were other stand out numbers packed with energy where there was no dancing at all. My brained was tried and tested with learning a Pointer Sisters duet called 'Cloudburst'. It has so many lyrics and we sing it at lightening speed. It was a quartet of fierce ladies and we practiced every free minute we got... to the point where if you didn't know we were rehearsing, we looked like we were talking to ourselves like crazy people. You know how people look when you don't realize they have a bluetooth in their ear?? Well, picture that and fast forward it 3x and that is what we looked like on any free moment in rehearsal to make sure we got these lyrics out of our mouths! The pay off was awesome! I felt so proud that we did. Seriously, download this song and see what I am talking about! (more...)

Wow, what a week?!?! Every day is so incredibly full and, as we like to say, EPIC, here in Sonoma. Last week was so beautiful. We had amazing shows, community outreach projects, artistic Salons, community open-mic events, family visiting, and overall THE BEST WEEK EVER!!! The week started with family in town. My folks got to experience their first Transcendence shows at Jack London State Park and were completely speechless at the end of them. They have been traveling around the world watching me perform my entire life... everywhere from summer fun in Germany to the freezing wintry temperatures of Moscow to multiple visits to Broadway and off-Broadway shows in New York to dozens of cities around our beautiful country, but this was their favorite experience of them all. What makes it different? The gathering of community in one magical space to share an experience TOGETHER before and during the show and the energy that comes from a group of people leaping and singing to unbelievable heights being inspired by the same mission while living completely in their own unique purposes TOGETHER and the undeniable feeling that comes from that being shared with your heart in those ruins under that canopy of stars. Special beyond words!  (more...)

The title character of THIRD is male:  Woodson Bull III, called 'Third' for short.  He's a blonde, blue-eyed athlete, with the kind of name that suggests he's a scion of a powerful upper class family-but looks can be deceiving. Unfortunately, the central character in the play, Professor Laurie Jameson, doesn't seem to know that, despite her Harvard/Oxford training in critical thinking. (more...)

Hauser Wirth & Schimmel to Present REVOLUTION IN THE MAKING Exhibit, 3/13/16Hauser Wirth & Schimmel to Present REVOLUTION IN THE MAKING Exhibit, 3/13/16
by BWW News Desk - Nov 23, 2015

Los Angeles...Beginning 13 March 2016, Hauser Wirth & Schimmel will present 'Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women, 1947 – 2016', the inaugural exhibition at its new complex in the heart of the downtown Los Angeles Arts District. Through nearly 100 works made by 34 artists over the past seventy years, this ambitious undertaking traces ways in which women have changed the course of art by deftly transforming the language of sculpture since the postwar period. Works on view reveal their makers inventing radically new forms and processes that privilege solo studio practice, tactility, and the idiosyncrasies of the artist's own hand. 'Revolution in the Making' explores multiple strains of artistic approaches, characterized by abstraction and repetition, that reject the precedent of a monolithic masterwork on a pedestal, employing such tactics as stacking, hanging, and intertwining, to create an intimate reciprocity between artist and viewer. The exhibition examines how elements that are central to art today – including engagement with found, experimental, and recycled materials, as well as an embrace of contingency, imperfection, and unstructured play – were propelled by the work of women who, in seeking new means to express their own voices, dramatically expanded the definition of sculpture.  (more...)

SOUND OFF Special Edition: Top 10 Favorite Things About THE SOUND OF MUSICSOUND OFF Special Edition: Top 10 Favorite Things About THE SOUND OF MUSIC
by Pat Cerasaro - Jul 22, 2015

Rodgers & Hammerstein's THE SOUND OF MUSIC is one of the most oft-produced and popular musicals of all time and this week has welcomed both spectacular news and saddening news regarding the past, present and future of the beloved family-friendly musical. Iconic original leading man Theodore Bikel passed away at the age of 91 earlier this week, forever closing the book on the first man to ever sing 'Edelweiss', one of the score's most beloved gems, not to mention portray Captain Von Trapp in the original Broadway production. Yet, on the horizon looms a brand new national tour of the tuner set to star a brand new discovery named Kerstin Anderson in the role of Maria Von Trapp alongside a fresh-faced cast including Ben Davis, Ashley Brown, Merwin Foard, Dan Tracy and more, all under the direction of Jack O'Brien. Considering the legendary legacy of the beloved title, now is an ideal time to list ten of my personal favorite things pertaining to the rich history of the musical on stages and screens both large and small. Two mainstage shows gone.  Even with weeks of fully well lived days, if I blink my eye then the summer will be completely over.  This really occurred to me this past weekend when the curtain came down on our Fantastical Family Night Concert.  That event not only marked the end of our second (out of four) scheduled Broadway Under the Stars concert series, but it also was the end of a very special week working with over 50 students at our Transcendence Kid's Camp.  Major kudos go out to all of the performers hired on the Fantastical Family Night contract.  These performers do the most work in the shortest amount of time in the season.  But honestly, I think it's also the most rewarding show too.   (more...)
