The SPCO's Liquid Music Series to Present Steven Mackey
by BWW News Desk - May 2, 2016

A volatile combination of music, imagery and dance take on the operatic form in Orpheus Unsung, composed by Steven Mackey with Jason Treuting (S? Percussion) in a production conceived and directed by Mark DeChiazza. Copresented with the Guthrie Theater June 16-18 at the Guthrie's Dowling Studio, Orpheus Unsung casts the electric guitar as the disembodied voice of Orpheus, who seeks to reverse fate and regain an irrevocably lost Eurydice. In this wordless opera, the myth is shattered and ultimately re-made within a space that fragments story and identity, and hangs in teetering balance between solidity and hallucinatory illusion. Orpheus's journey is illuminated in new language, as music collides and fuses with the expression of the body, cinematic imagery, and transformations of physical space. Alongside an ensemble of three dancers, Mackey and Treuting perform live in Orpheus Unsung, which will be presented alongside Mackey's engaging and personal string quartet Ars Moriendi, performed by musicians of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. BWW Review: Reimagined LES MISERABLES Asian/International Tour
by BWW Staff - Mar 20, 2016

LES MISERABLES stirred a musical maelstrom in Manila last Wednesday (March 16), and is poised to win audinces over via a memorable theatrical experience. At the heart of its seamless and dynamic storytelling beats a conscience that rouses, provokes, mangles, and transforms souls: a singular man's search for acceptance and meaning in a fractured and unforgiving 19th century France. This Cameron Mackintosh new production of Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil's legendary and popular musical takes center stage again, this time against the canvases of Victor Hugo's lesser known paintings--never before seen in the original London's West End and Broadway productions--providing a perfect complement to the production's memorable music and breath-taking sets of that iconic turning-barricade-flying-helicopter-falling-chandelier stature Mackintosh productions are known for. Downstair Cabaret Theatre Will Present FRON TRAGEDY TO TRANSCENDENCE
by BWW News Desk - Jul 9, 2016

Downstairs Cabaret Theatre is pleased to announce 2 performances only of From Tragedy to Transcendence: Bach, Casals, and the Six Suites for Cello Solo, featuring Steven Hancoff. On the very day that Pablo Casals' father bought the 13-year old child his first cello, Casals came upon a dusty manuscript of Bach's Cello Suites in an obscure second-hand bookstore near the Barcelona docks. No one had ever actually played the Cello Suites from the time Bach composed them in 1720. Casals practiced them daily for 12 years before he had the courage to present one in public. Now world-renowned jazz guitarist Steven Hancoff brings Bach, Casals and the Six Suites for Cello Solo back to glorious life through his remarkable acoustic guitar transcriptions in this telling of the Life of Sebastian Bach, his Legacy, and the Life of Pablo Casals. Performances are Saturday, July 16 at 8:00pm and Sunday, July 17 at 2:00pm at Downstairs Cabaret at Winton Place, 3450 Winton Place, Brighton-Henrietta (convenient free parking and handicapped accessible). Tickets are $25 general admission and may be purchased in advance by calling (585) 325-4370. Discounts are available for seniors (age 60 and above), groups (10 or more), full-time students (age 22 and under), military personnel, and DCT Members. The performance runs 2 hours with one 10-minute intermission. More information is available at www.DownstairsCabaret.org and www.stevenhancoff.com. (more...)
