BWW Recap: Violent Delights Have Violent Ends in WESTWORLD
by Jessica Naftaly - Oct 2, 2016

“Every hero has a choice.” That's not exactly the tagline of HBO's new drama Westworld, but it should be. Westworld explores mankind at it's core and what our choices say about us. It explores the depths and depravity of humanity, our culture, and our pleasures. What do our choices and our desires say? What is entertainment and why is it so often riddled with sex, violence, and most frequently sexual violence? While we constantly hide behind the separation between fiction and reality, the perverted, exploitative, and gratuitous demand for inclusion of what we generally condemn as morally wrong in our society to be present and pronounced in our media is undoubtable and HBO as a network is frequently one of our biggest culprits. But, perhaps that is why Westworld works so brilliantly. (more...)

Stephen H. Gobewole Describes Liberia's Economic Reality in New Release
by BWW News Desk - Nov 23, 2016

Liberia - founded as a country for freed blacks in the early 1800s - is a nation of extreme contrasts from everything to its urban dwellers and rural tribal residents to the wealthy and extremely poor. Patterned after European colonies, with The Newcomers taking land and resources from those who already lived there, its current state finds its roots in the past. A Liberian native describes his views on the country - and a possible new future for it - in his new book, released by Dog Ear Publishing. 'Liberia's Political Economy: An Examination of Public Institutional Quality' showcases author Stephen H. Gobewole's views of his native land and how it came to be that way. Historical background; analysis of such things as ethnic status, residence status, agriculture, economic constraints and confiscation of tribal land; research hypothesis; results and data collection; and summary and recommendations all are detailed in this book. An Afrobarometer study, a quantitative inquiry that measured citizens' perceptions of public institutional weakness based on their ethnic, residence and gender status, serves as a starting point to explain institutional failure in Liberia's government. The study's aim is to focus on such public institutions as rule of law, state authority and democratic accountability that are critical to enhance market performance, economic development and productive capability. In other words, such an approach will assist the Liberian government in minimizing poverty and improving its citizens' standard of living, the author writes, improving lives in a country rated as the third poorest in the world. Gobewole, raised in Liberia, earned a bachelor's and a master's degree from Rhode Island College and received a financial planning certificate from Bryant University. Gobewole received a PhD in public policy with a concentration in public management and leadership from Walden University. He served as assistant vice president for SunTrust Bank for about four years and for more than a decade managed bank branches for Sovereign Bank, Citizens Bank and Eastern Bank. BWW Review: Theatre Project Welcomes Back Happenstance With BROUHAHA
by Cybele Pomeroy - May 10, 2016

The performers of Happenstance Theater engage, intrigue, cavort, emote and display both physical precision and a remarkable range of organically produced sound effects. BROUHAHA's story, insofar as there is a story, lies in the development of the relationship between this cadre of classical clowns and The Newcomers- that is to say, us, the audience. We become conspirators in the greatest of comi-tragic secrets: even in the direst of times, there is yet opportunity for playfulness and joy. (more...)

BWW Reviews: STEEL MAGNOLIAS Bloom at Stagebrush Theatre
by Herbert Paine - Jun 9, 2014

Steel Magnolias is at heart a play about beauty, not the cosmetic kind that stylists manufacture with gels and lotions and sprays but the kind that tells in the truth lines on a woman's face, in the soul that she bares in private and safe moments with friends. The telling of the tale requires skilled and authentic performances by actresses that can reveal the shades and textures of joy and pain and faith and the will to endure no matter what hand life deals. In Stagebrush Theatre's current production of Robert Harling's play, directed by Judy Rollings, six remarkable actresses grace the stage and deliver the goods. (more...)

BWW Review: IF/THEN at Winspear Opera House

When IF/THEN debuted on Broadway in March 2014, it reunited original RENT stars Idina Menzel and Anthony Rapp with RENT director Michael Grief. Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt, whose 2008 rock musical NEXT TO NORMAL had received the Pulitzer Prize, wrote the much-anticipated show, and New York celebrated the team's brisk New York return. Although the show received mostly mixed-to-positive reviews, it lasted a mere 430 performances, despite mother-daughter duos flocking to see Menzel upon the icy heels of FROZEN's success. (more...)
