BWW Reviews: Deaf West's Dynamically Staged SPRING AWAKENING Returns Briefly to AnnenbergBWW Reviews: Deaf West's Dynamically Staged SPRING AWAKENING Returns Briefly to Annenberg
by Don Grigware - May 31, 2015

The play Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind, which was written in Germany in the late 19th century was censored for a time due to its frank portrayal of masturbation, abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide. Exposing the rocky sexual coming of age of a group of teenagers, its helter-skelter but life-affirming journey is again explored in the 2006 Tony Award winning musical of the same name Spring Awakening through folk based and alternative rock, and boasts some expertly staged storytelling, singing, choreography and exuberant performances at the Wallis Annenberg through June 7 only. This is a brief return of Deaf West's critically-acclaimed production from last fall 2014 directed by Michael Arden. (more...)

Ridgefield Playhouse to Welcome Charles Esten & Clare Bowen, 6/26Ridgefield Playhouse to Welcome Charles Esten & Clare Bowen, 6/26
by BWW News Desk - May 28, 2015

Fans will be able to see ABC's 'Nashville' stars LIVE at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Friday, June 26, at 8 p.m. Actors Charles Esten and Clare Bowen have plenty of experience making music on the stage and screen, Esten had a long-running stint at the start of his career playing Buddy Holly in the West End, while Bowen appeared in Spring Awakening in her native Australia. So it's no coincidence that they play singer-songwriters on the nighttime soap about the lives and loves of country musicians. Esten and Bowen have been writing and singing for a long time, and, thanks to the launching pad that 'Nashville' has provided, they've been scoring slots at the Stagecoach festival and opening gigs for artists such as Alan Jackson and Dierks Bentley. The Ancient Mariner will make it a great night out by pouring a complimentary glass of wine with dinner before the show when tickets are presented. This event is part of the Northeast Builders LLC Country Series with media sponsor Country 92.5fm. (more...)

by Jeffrey Walker - May 25, 2015

The Lusty Month of May; like the song says: "It's time to do a wicked thing or two!" It's May, the time when spring brings that hot-blooded, four letter word: lust. Musicals have had a steady history of lusty musical numbers. There are songs about rolling in the hay, and others extolling the virtues of different (ahem) flavors of man-candy. Some songs are paens to hot, steamy nights, and some are about what you do on those kind of nights.  (more...)
