The Museum of Modern Art announces Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978-1983, a major exhibition examining the scene-changing, interdisciplinary life of downtown New York's seminal alternative space, on view from October 31, 2017, through April 1, 2018, in the Roy and Niuta Titus Galleries. The East Village of the 1970s and 1980s continues to thrive in the public's imagination around the world. During the pioneering years of the neighborhood's evolution as a center of social life and creativity, Club 57 was a core institution. This exhibition will explore that legacy in full for the first time. Club 57 is organized by Ron Magliozzi, Curator, and Sophie Cavoulacos, Assistant Curator, Department of Film, with guest curator Ann Magnuson. Mark DeGarmo Dance will honor dance writer DEBORAH JOWITT with the 2016 “Educational Visionary” Lifetime Achievement Award to celebrate her many accomplishments.  Ms. Jowitt danced with notable names such as José Limon and Anna Sokolow, choreographed works shown in venues in both the United States and overseas, published articles in The New York Times, The Village Voice and Dance Magazine, among others, and has lectured, taught and conducted workshops at universities in the U.S. and abroad.  The award is presented to “visionaries who have promoted innovation in education through the arts.” Fellow dance writer, dancer and choreographer, Gus Solomons, jr., will present Ms. Jowitt's award and comedian Nat Towsen, host of Nat Towsen's Downtown Variety Hour, will serve as Master of Ceremonies throughout the evening. New York's “Dance Party of the Year” includes hors d'oeuvres, drinks, a performance by our students, a dance lesson from our teaching artists and a silent auction featuring gift certificates, dinners, vacations, and more. Adapted by Producing Artistic Director Karyl Lynn Burns and directed byBrian McDonald, the 25-member cast features many of the same actors from the original production that earned a "Critic's Choice" in the Los Angeles Times and rave reviews from Ventura County Star, CASA Magazine, VIDA Magazine and the Ventura Breeze. Presented as a play with music, this dynamic and compelling stage version is highly theatrical. A new musical version of the classic movie comes to the stage for the holiday season. The story  takes place in the 1940s in Indiana and focuses on a child named Ralphie, a daydreamer who spends his days counting down to Christmas. He wants a Red Ryder BB Gun, but as his parents and teachers warn him, "You'll shoot your eye out!"  All of the movie's best-loved moments are here, including the Old Man's leg-shaped lamp, the tongue-on-a-flagpole scene, the bunny suit, the Santa slide and all of Ralphie's extravagant daydreams. It's a big Broadway musical, complete with dazzling dance numbers and gorgeous sets. (more...)
