BWW Review: DISGRACED Faces Your Fears at Sydney Theatre CompanyBWW Review: DISGRACED Faces Your Fears at Sydney Theatre Company
by Brodie Paparella - Apr 25, 2016

Beg, borrow, or steal a ticket to this show. It is peerless in the present landscape of Sydney theatre, a razor-sharp scintillation that remarks most precisely on current culture. It is what this reviewer has long been waiting for, and prays becomes a zeitgeist for contemporary Australian narratives and artistic talent to aspire to, nay blossom into. A toast to director Sarah Goodes for a play that held such gravitas and pregnancy, of course to playwright Ayad Akhtar with congratulations on winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and also to Steve Francis for creating a sound design that transcended typicality and brought collective consciousness to this reading room drama. BWW Review: With THE GREAT JAZZ STANDARDS, Michael Feinstein Opens This Year's Jazz at Lincoln Center's 'Jazz and Popular Song Series' With Appealing VitalityBWW Review: With THE GREAT JAZZ STANDARDS, Michael Feinstein Opens This Year's Jazz at Lincoln Center's 'Jazz and Popular Song Series' With Appealing Vitality
by Alix Cohen - Apr 16, 2016

I hear music, mighty fine music . . . Host Michael Feinstein sings with pristine bass accompaniment, as Musical Director Tedd Firth's Big Band filters in musician by musician. The sweetest sounds I ever heard . . . he continues as a light saxophone joins syncopated rhythm. Then whomp! All 17 players swing. Rarely have I heard sound design so perfectly balanced, appropriately favoring vocals. Feinstein remains smooth and easy riding the wave. 'You may wonder about the role of jazz in popular song . . . ' our host begins at the start of Jazz at Lincoln Center's first of three segments of the Jazz & Popular Song Series in the Appel Room. At a time when popular songs came and went with alacrity, jazz artists meeting for improvisational jam sessions needed pieces they all knew. Thus jazz mined popular music creating an intersection of the two art forms. Aided and abetted by four very different featured guests, Feinstein illuminates by example, not narrative. (more...)

'The Deborah Zall Project: In The Company of Women' Set for Martha Graham Studio Theater, 5/13-14'The Deborah Zall Project: In The Company of Women' Set for Martha Graham Studio Theater, 5/13-14
by BWW News Desk - Apr 12, 2016

Deborah Zall (www.deborahzall.com) left the Martha Graham fold to pursue an independent career as a soloist, creating dramatic portrayals of women that are based primarily on works of dramatic literature. Her signature pieces include dances inspired by female characters drawn from Eugene O'Neill, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Tennessee Williams and F. Garcia Lorca. Last year, she was convinced to re-stage six of her classic female solos for past and present Martha Graham Dance Company members. The resulting evening, titled 'The Deborah Zall Project: In the Company for Women,' was mounted as an informal presentation in the Martha Graham Studio Theater in Westbeth. It proved so sensational that Ms. Zall was pressed to remount the evening this year as a full production. This time, it'll be done with four of her own pieces plus two complimentary works drawn from the Anna Sokolow Company. The concert will bear the same name and will be presented May 13 and 14, again at the Martha Graham Studio Theater, by Zall's nonprofit company, Classic Contemporary Dance Heritage Ltd. (more...)

BWW Review: Let the Youth Be Told in APA's New Hit SOCIAL SECURITYBWW Review: Let the Youth Be Told in APA's New Hit SOCIAL SECURITY
by Kristen Morale - Apr 11, 2016

There are quite a few advantages of getting old, despite what many people may believe: the well-worn worries of youth are whisked away in the leveled way more mature people live their lives, self-dictated rules and personal boundaries are set as people come into their own and emotions are at bay as people gradually accept and even embrace the monotone way in which their lives are lived. Youth can still be kept alive and may even be sought after, but that shouldn't be too strenuous a task, right? Ha, no. After seeing the workings of the Academy of Performing Art's newest production of Social Security, where insecurities run rampant, youth is a perpetual theme in hilarious unforeseen ways and basically nothing is secure, the irony of this show's title alone is bound to excite and surprise anyone one believes that youth cannot be rekindled in the old at heart.
