by BWW News Desk - Jul 25, 2015

AUBURN, N.Y-The Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival, by special arrangement with Theatrical Rights Worldwide, proudly produces the world premiere of the new North American production of SATURDAYNIGHT FEVER.  Performances run from July 22 through through August 12. Based on Nik Cohn's 1975 article 'Tribal Rites of the new Saturday Night' and Norman Wexler's 1977 screenplay it inspired, this iconic time capsule centers around Tony Manero, a Brooklyn youth whose weekend is spent at the local dance hangout. There, he escapes into the admiration of the crowd, a growing relationship and the pulse of the beat that enables him to forget the realities of his life, his dead-end job and his gang of deadbeat friends. This new production delivers all the favorite tunes and dance sequences while bringing out the dimension and layers of the story and the landscape of such an iconic Snapshot in American history.  Adapted for the stage by Robert Stigwood in collaboration with Bill Oakes, this new North American version features songs by The Bee Gees, is adapted for the stage by Sean Cercone and features additional music and lyrics by David Abbinanti.   (more...)

Met Museum to Display GRAND ILLUSIONS Staged Photography Exhibit, 8/10Met Museum to Display GRAND ILLUSIONS Staged Photography Exhibit, 8/10
by BWW News Desk - Aug 5, 2015

Photographers, like ventriloquists, can cast 'voices' in a seemingly infinite number of genres and period styles. This does not negate the camera's direct relationship to the world-tying image to subject as naturally as a footprint-but instead reveals that photographs are always admixtures of fiction and reality tilted toward one end of the scale or the other. Grand Illusions: Staged Photography from the Met Collection, a survey of 40 photographs spanning the first 170 years of the medium, focuses on the ways in which artists have staged and composed images so that the imaginary is pictured as if it were real. The installation will explore photography's relationship with other mediums such as literature and film, as well as its persuasive powers when used in advertising. (more...)

Nancy Stearns Theiss Releases New Book on Freemason's LifeNancy Stearns Theiss Releases New Book on Freemason's Life
by BWW News Desk - Aug 18, 2015

Author Nancy Stearns Theiss grew up a stone's throw away from the home of Rob Morris, an influential member of the Freemasons and founder of the Order of the Eastern Star. She details his life in a new book released by Dog Ear Publishing. Morris, a prolific writer, created poetry for special events such as funerals, dedications and Masonic gatherings across the United States and in Canada, earning him the title of poet laureate for Freemasonry in the 19th century. 'A Place in the Lodge: Dr. Rob Morris, Freemasonry and the Order of the Eastern Star' is based on more than 200 letters Morris and his family members composed while Morris was traveling. His family was numerous - he and his wife, Charlotte, had nine children, seven of whom made it to adulthood. From the beginning of his initiation March 5, 1846, in Mississippi, Morris worked to spread the message of the Masons, who considered education as something for the country's rising middle class, not just the wealthy. Morris worked as a teacher, traveling salesman and, eventually, Masonic lecturer. He founded the Order of the Eastern Star, a fraternity open to both men and women that was one of the first organizations to give women a voice in local and national issues. (Today that organization has more than 430,0000 members belonging to 4,600 chapters all over the world.) Morris' letters are a Snapshot of the 19th century, touching on issues about education, pioneer living, the women's movement and the growing divide between the North and the South. This intriguing book shines a light on a pivotal historic figure whose legacy has remained. Masonic lodges still revere his most famous poem, 'The Level and the Square.' Oldham County Historical Society Executive Director Nancy Stearns Theiss writes a weekly history column for the Louisville Courier-Journal and compiles oral histories in the Living Treasures Program for the Oldham Era newspaper. She's also published several books. The historical society runs a history center that includes the J. Chilton Barnett Archives and Library, Peyton Samuel Family Museum and Rob Morris Educational Center, which is in the former Presbyterian church where Morris lectured and recited his poetry. Stearns Theiss and her husband, Jim, live on the family farm close to LaGrange, Ky., where Morris' name still resonates today. For information, contact her at nancystheiss@gmail.com.
