Eric Bogosian's TALK RADIO to Begin Performances Next Month at The Chain Theatre

Variations Theatre Group will present Eric Bogosian's Pulitzer Prize-nominated play TALK RADIO beginning September 12th, with the Opening Night set for Tuesday, September 16th at The Chain Theatre. Inspired by the 1984 murder of controversial shock jock Alan Berg, TALK RADIO is set in a Cleveland radio station over the course of Barry Champlain's two-hour broadcast as he's being scrutinized that night by producers fixated on taking the show national, and fueled as always by coffee, cocaine and Jack Daniel's. Barry's jousts with his unseen callers-ranging from a white supremacist to a woman obsessed with her garbage disposal-are interspersed with confrontations by his ex-deejay pal and his sometime girlfriend/producer. The catchy and clever script more than makes up for the drags during movement pieces, and that dragging might have been as much from my desire to get back to the story and its characters as from anything else. I was giggling throughout, and there were some nice moments of genuine tenderness. Most of the characters were lovable, and those that weren't were eminently hateable, which is just as useful and twice as hard. If you lived through the 1990's, and especially if you were young during that time, you'll recognize these characters instantly, and this production is made to tickle your nostalgia thoroughly (more...)

The INFOCUS Juried Exhibition of Self-Published Photobookswill be at Phoenix Art Museum from August 23 to September 28, 2014. It explores the ways photographic artists are using newly available commercial technologies to self-publish photobooks. Entries were accepted until the end of July when a jury of seven industry professionals reviewed the 271 photobooks that came from 12 countries to select the 151 that will be on display to the public as part of the exhibition. Strawdog Theatre Company and Artistic Director Hank Boland have announced the first production of their 2014 - 2015 season, Max Frisch's The Arsonists through September 27, direction by Matt Hawkins and adapted by Alistair Beaton, at Strawdog Theatre Company, 3829 N. Broadway St. The opening night performance is Monday, Aug. 25 at 8 p.m. The performance schedule is Thursdays - Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. An industry performance is Monday, Sept. 8 at 8 p.m. Single tickets are currently on sale for $15 for preview performances, $50 for the Board Preview performance that includes appetizers, open bar and a reception immediately following the production, and $28 for the regular run.
