Based on the film Passione d'Amore directed by Ettore Scola

Based on the novel Fosca by I. U. Tarchetti

PASSION, winner of 4 Tony Awards including Best Music and Lyrics, Best Book, and Best Musical, features music and lyrics by the acclaimed Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, Company, Follies, Into The Woods, Gypsy) and book by James Lapine (Falsettos, Into The Woods, Sunday In The Park With George).

PASSION opened on Broadway in 1994, and received its London revival in 2010 at the Donmar Warehouse as part of Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday celebrations.

Stephen Sondheim's PASSION revolves around a handsome Italian solider, Giorgio, separated from his beautiful mistress, who is shattered and ultimately changed by the unconditional and obsessive love of Fosca, his Colonel's chronically ill and plain cousin. Her unrelenting passions force him to re-evaluate his beliefs about love and attraction between two human beings.

BWW Review: Talented Cast Shows there Is More than Science to Mad Cow's PHOTOGRAPH 51BWW Review: Talented Cast Shows there Is More than Science to Mad Cow's PHOTOGRAPH 51
by Matt Tamanini - Feb 26, 2015

In the last two years, Orlando's Mad Cow Theatre has assumed the mantle as one of the Southeast's leaders in producing 'Science Plays.' In addition to their Second Annual Science Play Festival, which begins Friday, February 27th, the Church Street theatre recently premiered Anna Ziegler's affecting play PHOTOGRAPH 51, about the race to discover the structure of DNA. On first blush, such a technical topic doesn't seem like the most obvious choice for a compelling drama, but what Ziegler and director Denise Gillman obviously understand is that a good play, no matter its subject, is best when focused on human relationships and emotions. PHOTOGRAPH 51, which seems as if it was written for Mad Cow's intimate Zehngebot-Stonerock Theatre, provides plenty of science, but truly excels when the actors pull back the layers on their characters' intricacies. Poulenc's music is almost hard to believe; romantic without sweetness, contemporary without alienating, and among the extraordinary composers repertoire this epic opera stands out as a remarkable achievement, and this season Washington National Opera Artistic Director Francesca Zambello has designed a beautiful production to accompany it. That and some of the most impressive vocal power on display anywhere in the city makes the Kennedy Center's latest operatic offering an absolute joy to the senses. (more...)

Pacific Symphony to Offer World Premiere Violin Concerto Performance, 3/12Pacific Symphony to Offer World Premiere Violin Concerto Performance, 3/12
by BWW News Desk - Feb 26, 2015

Orange County, Calif.—Feb. 25, 2015—An evening of profound emotion and beautiful introspection takes place when Pacific Symphony performs “Tchaikovsky's Pathétique,” a concert of deep personal meaning to Music Director Carl St.Clair during his 25th anniversary season. In January 1990, St.Clair auditioned to become the Symphony's maestro, and it was Tchaikovsky's eloquent and imPassioned Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique,” that forged a connection between him and the orchestra—making this piece a must for his 25th season. Centering the program is the Symphony-commissioned violin concerto written by eight-time Academy Award-nominated composer James Newton Howard and performed by Grammy Award-winning violinist James Ehnes. Howard structured the second movement around a child's melody and dedicated it to the memory of St.Clair's first son, Cole Carsan St.Clair. The performance is being recorded live for CD release along with Howard's first Symphony-commissioned work, “I Would Plant a Tree” (2009), furthering St.Clair's and the Symphony's endeavor to support the works of living composers. New York's DENART Features 900 Naked People, 900 Works of ArtNew York's DENART Features 900 Naked People, 900 Works of Art
by BWW News Desk - Feb 26, 2015

This weekend New York's first retail body painting studio, DenArt, painted its 900th living canvas. Since 2011, 900 people have walked in their studio - with excitement and perhaps a bit of trepidation - took off their shirts (or more) and worked with professional artists to transform their own skin into a masterpiece. The mission of DenArt studio is to take art off the museum walls and bring it to the people, through the relatable and empowering medium of body art. DenArt offers several different body painting experiences, including private sessions and photo shoots, group classes, and professional bodypainting education. DenArt will even cater work parties or other professional events. Of the 900 bodies painted, some have even been professional models who help start the conversation via their body art at launch parties. DenArts' past clients include Stoli to promote new flavors, Kings of Leon to promote the launch of new albums, and many others. One popular body painting experience this season has been DenArt's Paint in the Dark UV class, where couples or friends paint each other with glow-in-the-dark paint in complete darkness with only few black UV lights on. In a recent Valentine's Day edition, 30 couples chose to celebrate each other by letting go of their inhibitions and their clothes and picking up a paintbrush. The classes challenge participants not only to be the canvas, but the painter as well. Working with DenArt's cofounder and master painter, Danny Setiawan, and other painting instructors, the participants are encouraged to get out of their comfort zone and lean into the creativity and freedom of temporary body art and the cool tickle of the paintbrush on their skin. DenArt's large, professional and luxurious studio space (located at Studios LIC, 21-07 Borden Avenue, 5th Floor, Long Island City, NY 11101) helps to make clients feel comfortable as they shed their clothes and step into being living art. The popular Paint in the Dark UV class will come to in end in March, so that DenArt can continue to provide new and innovated spaces and experiences for New Yorkers who want to get back in touch with art. About DenArt DenArt studio is the first retail body painting studio in New York, and the first company to bring the body painting experience to the general public. DenArt offers a variety of experiences from private body painting sessions and photo-shoots to classes and body painting sessions for parties or events. Founding artist Danny Setiawan first got the idea for DenArt when he wanted to increase the impact and relevancy of his art. In 2009, Ekaterina Dorozhkina joined and helped Setiawan turn his Passion into a business. Learn more at http://www.denartny.com/ (more...)

BWW Review: Orlando Shakespeare Goes unto the Breach with Masterful HENRY VBWW Review: Orlando Shakespeare Goes unto the Breach with Masterful HENRY V
by Matt Tamanini - Feb 25, 2015

One of the great benefits of having a professional Shakespeare company in town is that they are able to invest in productions of some of the Bard's works that don't often get produced at traditional theatres. While Orlando Shakespeare certainly produces great plays not found in the First Folio, the fact that they are able to bring performances of shows like TITUS ANDRONICUS, THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR, and PERICLES to the stage is a tremendous boon for Central Florida theatre fans. Productions of HAMLET, ROMEO AND JULIET, the Scottish Play, and A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM will never go out of style, but it is truly special when you are able to attend an artistically satisfying production of one of Shakespeare's lesser seen works; like the masterful HENRY V, running through March 22nd at Orlando Shakespeare.
