by BWW News Desk - Jan 27, 2016

For their first production in 2016, Seven Siblings Theatre will present Picasso at the Lapin Agile, a surreal comedy written by legendary comic/actor/screenwriter, Steve Martin. Set in a bar in 1904 Paris, Picasso at the Lapin Agile imagines a meeting of Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in their youth, just before they each made their greatest contributions to society. One year later, Einstein publishes his Special Theory of Relativity, and in 1907, Picasso would go on to paint Les D'emoiselles D'Avignon. This irreverent comedy is both hilarious and poignant as the regulars and bar staff chime in on subjects such as love, art, the nature of genius, and what the future might hold. (more...)

BWW Review: BalletMet Proves Theme of Humanity isn't Black and White in CARMEN.MAQUIABWW Review: BalletMet Proves Theme of Humanity isn't Black and White in CARMEN.MAQUIA
by Amanda Etchison - Feb 8, 2016

Upon first glance, the sterile, white sets that greet the audience once the curtain rises on BalletMet's "Carmen.maquia" might have many theatergoers double-checking their programs. Indeed, the barren stage, interrupted by amorphous masses that appear to be constructed from thin layers of crepe paper, in no way resembles the streets of Seville, Spain. Yet it is on this blank canvas that the dancers of BalletMet create color through movement and emotion, effectively painting a vibrant, Pablo Picasso-esque portrait of humanity. (more...)

BWW Reviews: A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM at Cabrillo Music TheatreBWW Reviews: A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM at Cabrillo Music Theatre
by Cary Ginell - Feb 1, 2016

Laurel and Hardy must be smiling in the comedy Valhalla. Cabrillo Music Theatre's near-perfect production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, which opened last night at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza's Scherr Forum, brings back the classic, broad humor from vaudeville, performed by an inspired cast of crazies who not only aren't afraid of anything going wrong, but are probably HOPING for mishaps that would destroy any other show. This is, of course, because Forum is one of those shows where spontaneity and the unexpected is almost as obligatory as Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart's uproarious script and Stephen Sondheim's witty lyrics. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum/book by Burt Shevelove & Larry Gelbart/ music & lyrics by Stephen Sondheim/Cabrillo Music Theatre, Thousand Oaks/directed by Lewis Wilkenfeld/choreographed by John Charron/through February 14 A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum is silliness personified from its zany characters and inane plot contrivances to its corny yet witty dialogue. It is clever farce set to music. Mistaken identities, zippity fast exits and entrances...it has no rhyme or reason but is terribly, terribly funny with belly laughs about every two seconds. Cabrillo's current revival is astonishingly good with a delicious cast and superlative direction from Lewis Wilkenfeld. It's a practically flawless production. (more...)
