The hit West End production of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, directed by Sam Mendes, announced today that it has extended its booking period by six months until 1 November 2014. The show had previously been booking until 31 May 2014. The production, which has so far been seen by almost 300,000 people since it began previews in May 2013, is extending its run due to popular demand, releasing almost 400,000 extra tickets. (more...)

A Contemporary Theatre Board President Colin Chapman announces that Artistic Director Kurt Beattie will retire at the end of ACT's 2015 50th Anniversary Season and will be succeeded by John Langs, a nationally recognized theatre artist who has served as ACT's Associate Artistic Director since 2013. Beattie, ACT's Artistic Director since 2003, will assume the role of Artistic Director Emeritus upon his retirement, stewarding long-term projects already in development as well as acting and directing in upcoming seasons. The Washington Stage Guild begins its 2014-15 Season of Love and/or Marriage with the Washington area premiere of PEN by David Marshall Grant, playing October 30 through November 23. In the production directed by Kasi Campbell, a divorced couple wrangle over their college-bound son's future, and while the boy's life is about to change, he and his mother undergo perplexing changes themselves. It's 1969, the end of a turbulent decade, and the turmoil in the country is only one factor as Matt and his parents struggle to stay connected. The bonds of a family some would call broken, expressed in Grant's sharp and pointed dialogue, made this funny, touching play an off-Broadway hit. (more...)

To close its 47th Season, Marin Theatre Company will produce the West Coast premiere of Failure: A Love Story by the 'hugely talented Chicago writer' (Chicago Tribune) Philip Dawkins. Directed by MTC's artistic director Jasson Minadakis, this 'enchanted and enchanting' play about love and loss will feature five actors playing multiple characters, using puppets and playing live music both original (by MTC's frequent collaborator Chris Houston, a Berkeley-based composer and musician) and from the era of the play - 1920s Chicago. Asolo Rep's 2014-15 season continues with GOOD PEOPLE, David Lindsay-Abaire's 2011 Tony nominated play that cracks open the gritty world of the blue collar worker to reveal America's often rigid social strata. Academy Award-winning actress Frances McDormand received a Tony Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the play's central character, Margie Walsh, in 2011. This sharp comedy-infused drama opens Friday, January 16, 2015 at 8pm, with previews Wednesday, January 14 and Thursday, January 15 at 8pm. The workshops will not only provide professional instruction on acting, singing, choreography and theatre, but will help students build their public speaking skills and confidence by using more nontraditional, artistic teaching methods.
