The British Museum Presents WITCHES AND WICKED BODIES, 9/25-1/11

The power of the witch has always gripped the artistic imagination. This is the first exhibition at the British Museum to present a survey of the subject in this rich and innovative exploration of the representation of the witch and malevolent female figures in the graphic arts. Spanning from the 1400s through to the end of the Victorian age, 'Witches and Wicked Bodies' will delve into the origins of the traditional image of the witch and how this developed as artists fed off public attitudes and current events. Prints and drawings will be shown alongside additional objects that illustrate that the imagery of sorcery and magic extends back to antiquity. Some examples of Greek vases and oil flasks with paintings of sirens, harpies and the famous classical sorceresses, Circe and Medea are included to emphasise this link. (more...)

Anna Netrebko to Lead MACBETH, Opening Sept 24 at The Met

Anna Netrebko sings her first North American performances of the charismatic villainess of Verdi's Macbeth this season, in starry cast that also includes Željko Lu?i? as Macbeth, Joseph Calleja as Macduff, and René Pape as Banquo. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi will lead all seven performances of the opera, which opens September 24 in a revival of noted Shakespeare director Adrian Noble's 2007 production. One of the most beloved operas of all time, La Traviata was also the inspiration for the hit film 'Pretty Woman' starring Julia Robers ('Violetta') and Richard Gere ('Alfredo'). But while Hollywood insists on a 'happily-ever-after' ending, opera (and real life) often takes a different direction. La Traviata's moving story and music will be brought to life on The Madrid Theatre stage by an outstanding cast, led by Shira Renee Thomas and Dylan F. Thomas at the Sunday 3 pm matinees (9/21,28), and byRachelle Woolston and Matthew Miles at the 7:30 pm Saturday evening performance (9/27). Red Turnip Theater does not "squeeze blood" from this play, but it definitely paints the turnip red. Red Turnip Theater brings an intimate take on this acclaimed play.
