In 1860 Wagner went to Paris to arrange a performance of his new opera, Tannhauser at the Paris Opera.  While there he made the obligatory visits to the great composers living in and around the city.  His visit to Rossini was memorable as the older Bel Canto school composer had reportedly made some very disparaging remarks about Wagner's music, so Wagner went with more than a bit of trepidation.  These rumors proved to be false and what ensued was an afternoon of an exchange of musical ideas and reminiscences about their careers and accomplishments, in which they shared opinions on and cited influences of a number of the great composer of their era.  All this was recorded by the Parisian musician and journalist, Edmond Michotte. Contemporary Art Seen through the Lens of Walter Benjamin's Magnum Opus

The writings of Walter Benjamin, the influential German Jewish philosopher and cultural critic, are the basis for a contemporary art exhibition at the Jewish Museum from March 17 through August 6, 2017. The Arcades: Contemporary Art and Walter Benjamin will examine themes in the author's magnum opus The Arcades Project via contemporary artworks, in media ranging from photography and video to sculpture and painting, and annotations by poet Kenneth Goldsmith. Folksbiene's LIGHT UP THE NIGHT: a Concert of Yiddish Theater Composers

 To ring in the New Year, on January 1 National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF) will present 'Light Up The Night,' a concert of rediscovered and restored pre- and post-WWII music from the theatrical works of the great composers of the Golden Age of Yiddish Theater.  These include Ellstein, Goldfaden, Olshanetsky, Rumshinsky and Secunda.  All are leading songwriters from the era of 'The Golden Bride,' which was presented by Folksbiene Theatre in 2015 and 2016.  The cast will feature performers who were acclaimed in that production, backed by a 16-piece orchestra.  The production is in Yiddish with projected supertitles.  The full concert will be offered twice, at 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM, in Edmond J. Safra Hall at Museum of Jewish Heritage, 36 Battery Place. (more...)

'My Name Is... The Lost Children of Kloster Indersorf' Opens Today at the Museum of Jewish Heritage

Children and teenagers who had managed to survive concentration camps, forced labor, life in hiding, and the devastating loss of family members during World War II faced great uncertainty after liberation. Some of these "lost" children found refuge and relatives through a United Nations-sponsored relief center in a former convent named Kloster Indersdorf. These children are the subject of a new exhibition, titled My Name Is… The Lost Children of Kloster Indersdorf, at the Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust. The exhibition is on view January 18, 2017 through April 30, 2017. (more...)

The performance schedule has been changed for 'Light Up The Night,' a theatrical concert of rediscovered and restored Yiddish theater songs by Ellstein, Goldfaden, Olshanetsky, Rumshinsky, and Secunda, to be presented by National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF) January 1 in Edmond J. Safra Hall at Museum of Jewish Heritage, 36 Battery Place, Manhattan.  Originally two shows were planned, at 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM.  The 2:00 PM performance continues as scheduled but the 6:00 PM performance has been canceled. Miami New Drama at Colony Theatre Presents the American Premiere of TERROR

As part of its new permanent residency and management role at Colony Theatre on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, Miami New Drama officially begins its 2017 season with the American premiere of Terror. The play will be directed by two-time Tony Award-winning Director Gregory Mosher, who is also the former Artistic Director of Lincoln Center in New York City. Under the Artistic Direction of Co-Founder Michel Hausmann, Miami New Drama brings the American adaptation and translation of this German play stateside. The original German version has been translated not only in script, but also to be consistent with American law. Previews for the American premiere of Terror begin January 26, 2017 and the show runs January 28 through February 19, 2017.   (more...)
