BWW Interview: Tech Talk with Set Designer Lisa LarattaBWW Interview: Tech Talk with Set Designer Lisa Laratta
by Frank Benge - Apr 7, 2016

One of the more clearly visible technical aspects of a show for average theatre-goers is the set. What isn't quite as clear is just what goes into the creation of the world the characters inhabit in the play you are seeing. Set design, sometimes called scenic design, is the art of designing and creating the sets used in plays or movies. At times, designing can be as simple as arranging a few pieces of furniture on a stage. That type of set design is not what one things of, however, when one talks to set designer, Lisa Laratta, the subject of this edition of Tech Talk. (more...)

BWW Review: Marin Theatre Presents a Regal ANNE BOLEYNBWW Review: Marin Theatre Presents a Regal ANNE BOLEYN
by Harmony Wheeler - Apr 29, 2016

Like its title queen, Howard Brenton's 'Anne Boleyn' knocks at Curiosity's door, difficult to grasp, but fascinating nonetheless. Henry VIII nearly erased the historical figure from the books, with religious leaders and historians labeling Anne a martyr or a harlot over the years. In his revised history, Brenton offers a strong, clever Boleyn, the effective and vibrant Liz Sklar in Marin Theatre Company's West Coast Premiere. This Anne loves a tender Henry and considers herself an Esther positioned for 'such a time as this.' But Brenton also bookends his play with a mocking Anne who concludes her lengthy tale in an abrupt, contrived message disconnected from preceding material. Where 'Boleyn' works best, however, is in its politics and religion, and it's a shame its final scene only briefly references that which an overall smart script has built. (more...)

BWW Review: DEAD MAN WALKING Shines Light into the Darkness in Georgetown, TXBWW Review: DEAD MAN WALKING Shines Light into the Darkness in Georgetown, TX
by Amy Bradley - Apr 27, 2016

The Sarofim School of Fine Arts Department of Theatre presents DEAD MAN WALKING at the creative theatre in the round stage known as Jesse H. and Mary Gibbs Jones Theater. Located in the heart of Georgetown, Texas and more specifically, Southwestern University, director Kathleen Juhl gathers students to tell a tale of a very unlikable young man watching the clock of his life run out. Set in 1970's Louisiana, the audience is transported through the stories of intolerance rather than scenery. Opening with a bare stage, some chairs, and a simple platform, the play begins with Sister Helen Prejean (played my Ally Oliphint) curious and nonjudgemental about her questionable surroundings in "the projects". Soon, she is asked by a local priest to visit a man on death row, and with some hesitation, she goes against the advice of her peers and ventures to the prison. With the bars and jail represented through creative cross lighting and distance, Matthew Poncelet (played by Dillon Betros) awaits, like a lion waiting for prey. The young man facing the last week of his life comes alive in his berating and tempting of Sister Prejean to abandon him through his brutish and ignorant dialogue. This stands in contrast with Sister Prejean's attempts to  humanize a convicted murderer and rapist, as she is on a mission of religious guidance and tolerance, and not wanting to pass judgement. BWW Review: Jubilant SISTER ACT Will Raise You Up at MTWBWW Review: Jubilant SISTER ACT Will Raise You Up at MTW
by Don Grigware - Apr 11, 2016

Sister Act the Musical started out in 2006 at the Pasadena Playhouse, premiered in London's West End in 2009 and then underwent serious revisions before coming to Broadway in 2011. I remember liking the first mounting in 2006 with many reservations. Since I loved the 1992 film so much, I didn't feel that the stage version was particularly faithful...no pun intended. Well, with all the 2011 changes, MTW's revival of the Broadway version is tops, a joyful, tuneful, splashy romp that never lets down, with a tremendous cast, stellar direction from Michael Matthews and soulful choreography from Daniel Smith. Douglas Carter Beane, who penned the screenplay To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and the Tony nominated play The Little Dog Laughed, added new book material for the national tour, included here, and this contributes substantially to molding a sleek and unforgettable show.
