Based on the 20th Century Fox motion picture, with a screenplay by Gary Ross and Anne Spielberg

The 1987 hit movie featuring Tom Hanks bursts onstage in this vibrant, funny and touching musical. When frustrated adolescent Josh Baskin wishes he were "big" and wakes up the next morning a 30-year-old man, he discovers there's much more to being an adult than he's bargained for-and learns we must all grow up at our own pace, in our own time. A witty, moving, insightful book and a dazzling, energetic, heartfelt, contemporary score make this already classic motion picture fantasy an unforgettable theatrical experience. 'Big' is satisfyingly good. The music of David Shire, the lyrics of Richard Maltby Jr., the book by Jerome Weidman and the choreography by Susan Stroman extol all the values of the grand tradition of musicals. BWW Review: Stunning ZOOT SUIT Revival at Taper Mirrors Present Day Politics
by Don Grigware - Feb 20, 2017

Let's get one thing perfectly clear from the get.go. Luis Valdez's Zoot Suit which premiered at the Mark Taper Forum and on Broadway in 1978, is a milestone. Broadway had not seen anything quite like it up to that point. First of all, it put Mexicans into the mainstream ... and their Pachuco culture, including their music and dance. In form it's a serious play about the Zoot Suit murders of 1942 in Southern California, but it is laced with humor, song and dance, classifying it in both realms of fact and fantasy. Now, after 39 years, in the 50th anniversary year of Center Theatre Group, Zoot Suit returns in an all new revival, once again directed by the brilliant Valdez. It has a fantastic cast, is high on entertainment value...and its issues do indeed mirror those present in today's politically ruthless world. (more...)

BWW Interview: Will Holbrook Talks ROMEO AND JULIET and His Famous Grandpa
by Don Grigware - Feb 20, 2017

Will, your grandpa is a truly great actor, one of the best. What is it like to perform for him? How has he inspired you? Is he attentive to your needs - both giving and constructively critical ... or does he leave you on your own to overcome your own failures? Is he happy or unhappy that you have chosen the acting profession? It isn't particularly different for me having him in the audience. He is an inspirational figure to me because he loves what he does and he works hard. There are many lessons in watching him work at his senior age, and observing his passion to keep moving is an incredible thing. I am very glad we get to have the grandfather-grandson relationship we do, and he is always asking me how he can help or if I have any questions. He has always been my grandpa first, and it is very comforting to know that I have someone who I can ask anything, about life or about the business. I think he is happy for me that I am pursuing my passion, and he sees where my heart is at, in the work and (more...)

Franklin Lakes Preschoolers Raise Money with Their Art Auction
by BWW News Desk - Feb 20, 2017

Preschool Art Auction Raises $2,500 for Make-A-Wish Foundation. Each month, The Learning Experience in Franklin Lakes teaches their preschoolers about the importance of giving back and what it means to be a good citizen in our local and global community. This month, on February 10th, The Learning Experience Preschool in Franklin Lakes hosted their annual BeCause our Hearts Beat Art Auction, one of their favorite philanthropic events of the year. Tying in Valentine's Day and American Heart Month, their preschoolers created heart art and sold it to benefit Make-A-Wish, a charity dedicated to the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions, to enrich their experience with hope, strength and joy. Parents visited the auction to purchase their child's art and made a donation. The Children were so excited to show off their masterpieces and they were very happy to be helping sick children with all the donations. The preschool students raised over $2,500 for Make-A-Wish this year. TLE Franklin Lakes also partnered with local businesses and raise an additional $1,600 in raffle prizes. Local partners include: The Soccer Post, Stop & Shop, White Maple Café, Moxie Ridgewood, Uncle Louie's Pizza, Parian & Sons Jewelry, Kayal Orthopedic Center, Environmental Mechanical Tech, Franklin Lakes Pizza, Hand And Stone Massage, Lisa's Mediterranean Cuisine. All year long TLE works on philanthropy lessons with the help of Grace The Greyhound and Charity Chihuahua, the lovable and hug-gable dog mascots for philanthropy. The philanthropy curriculum at The Learning Experience, helps teach children that it is not how Big or small you are, it is the size of your heart that matters. Through animation, classroom activities and participatory songs, Grace and Charity introduce children to topics like the value of helping others, volunteering and donating. Owner Dilek Yesilyurt says of the event, 'It is so important to me to teach our young children both creativity and compassion for others. I feel a huge sense of happiness and pride knowing that our students, as young as 3, can understand why we must help others and that we are making a positive impact for sick children. We focus so much of early education on academics, which are hugely important, but we must not forget to feed these young children's character development as well. This event is one of my favorite things that we do all year and I love seeing how proud our students are of their artwork and how happy they are they are helping other children.' Nationwide Preschoolers at The Learning Experience Centers raise awareness for children-focused charities nationwide each year, including more than $500,000 for Make-A-Wish Foundation last year. About The Learning Experience The Learning Experience is one of the nation's fastest growing academies of early education for children ages six weeks to five years old. With a greater national emphasis on educational development during the most crucial years of a child's growth, The Learning Experience places a prominent focus on programs that advance scholastic preparation. The Learning Experience prepares children academically and socially via innovative scholastic and enrichment programs such as the L.E.A.P. curriculum, a cutting-edge proprietary approach to learning which has more than 95 percent of its children graduating preschool reading at a Kindergarten level or higher. To complement the academic curriculum, The Learning Experience utilizes various enrichment programs crucial to advancing learning and overall balance, such as philanthropy, Yippee 4 Yoga, Music 4 Me, Movin' N Groovin', manners and etiquette, and foreign language. https://thelearningexperience.com/our-centers/nj/franklin-lakes/franklin-lakes www.facebook.com/TheLearningExperienceFranklinLakes/ (more...)

BWW Review: Good Things Come In Three's with American Bard's VISIONARY VOICES
by Kristen Morale - Feb 19, 2017

Directed by Aimee Todoroff and Tonya Pinkins and now in performances at the Gloria Maddox Theatre, Visionary Voices begins with Susan Glaspell's Trifles, followed by Marita Bonner's Exit: An Illusion and ending with Glaspell's The People - three wonderful plays that are more engaging and poignant in their single acts than many full length shows ever have the opportunity of being. All three plays take place at or near the start of the twentieth century, craftily combining themes as relevant today as they were then - collaborating with suspenseful plots, troubled characters and questionable motives that, when put together, show just how clever Todoroff and Pinkins are. In both the structure of this show as a whole and the effect it has on the audience, the truth here is that Visionary Voices is more than a statement - it is definitely a production worth your time.
