The ’80s delivered endless iconic pop culture trends like leg warmers, neon, Walkmans, Whitney, and Madonna. Broadway in the ’80s also saw a unique culture shift as British mega musicals like LES MISERABLES and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA began to take over the American stage. First on the scene, though, was CATS, which uniquely married the worlds of theater, ballet, spandex, and synthesized music in 1982. And although CATS has purrhaps only grown more hair-raising with age (not to mention enhanced audience expectations), the song-and-dance spectacle continues to mesmerize and mystify audiences more than 40 years after its inception.

In this new, introspective arrangement (with thanks to Peter Hume), Manchester reduced the former expansive orchestral renditions of the piece to a quieter, more intimate version with her vocal/piano performance accompanied only by a simple string trio and solo bassoonist.

But when all is said and done, after the big speeches are made and the morals have been imparted, TOOTSIE's 1982 DNA proves inextricable. Its parting lesson is fundamentally that women should be women and men should be men. The show's progressivism is limited to a fairly surface-level, lighthearted second-wave feminism that never rises above a 'very special episode' of any '80s sitcom. (Indeed, Michael's apartment set looks strikingly sitcomish, and all the dialogue there fits the bill.)

Battery Dance celebrates the 40th Anniversary of its free summer festival from August 12-20, 2021, in partnership with Battery Park City Authority. The 40th Annual Battery Dance Festival features 16 international dance films from August 12-14 at 7pm ET via YouTube. 40 in-person and livestreamed performances will be staged at Robert F. The criteria are that these shows have been nominated for Best Musical from the 3rd Tony Awards (the ceremony that started the Best Musical category) in 1949 to the nominations of what will now be the 74th Tony Awards in 2021. I will be determining their signs based upon their Broadway premiere date. With those rules in mind, here we go!

With Women in Theatre Through the Decades, we will be highlighting the vital role that women have played in theatre history, showcasing those who paved the way and who continue to make history today. This week, we are highlighting the accomplishments of women in theatre throughout the 1980s and the 1990s!

Flat Rock Playhouse was awarded a $20,000 grant by the Community Foundation of Henderson County for their Playhouse Jr. initiative. The Playhouse launched Playhouse Jr. Productions in 2019 with Letterland Alive! The Musical developed in partnership with Letterland, a phonics program for K-3rd grade students, and writer/composer Ethan Andersen, who most recently wrote Rootabaga Express! a musical inspired by the works of Carl Sandburg and performed in the summers by Flat Rock Playhouse apprentices at the Carl Sandburg National Historic Site.

Inspired by the success from their safe drive-in performances of La bohème in the Fall, which heralded the return of live, in-person, opera to San Diego County since the start of the pandemic, and provided over 300 jobs to many, San Diego Opera has announced a Spring season of safe, socially-distanced, drive-in performances.

Recipients to be honored at the 43rd annual national celebration of the arts are: multi-disciplinary artist, choreographer, and actress Debbie Allen; singer-songwriter and activist Joan Baez; country singer-songwriter Garth Brooks; violinist Midori; and actor Dick Van Dyke.

GHOSTLIGHT RECORDS and JOE's PUB will present a free virtual celebration of the new album The Liz Swados Project on Tuesday, November 24 at 8:00 PM Eastern. The event will feature several of the performers who appear on the album, offering singular musical performances and personal insights into Swados' work.
