by Ben Rimalower - Feb 1, 2019

Well, next up in decluttering my apartment is clearing out the big, tall stack of different Guys and Dolls CDs I've spent a few decades collecting. I think I could hack this particular task without any tears (or maybe like you know without having to blog about it) were it not for that gorgeous black square with the orange and yellow title letters thrown into the air alongside perfect pair of cartoon dice. 1992 Grammy Award-winning New Broadway Cast Recording, it's gonna be hard to leave you, baby.

Washington Stage Guild Presents World Premiere of ALL SAVE ONE
by Stephi Wild - Nov 2, 2018

The Washington Stage Guild presents the world premiere of All Save One by area playwright Greg Jones Ellis. Set in Hollywood 1950, this witty comedy-drama reveals what goes on behind closed doors when a world-famous writer, his actress wife and his longtime "secretary" arrive from England, only to have their comfortable household disrupted by the arrival of a handsome young priest and a film producer with a secret of his own. Add a malicious young blackmailer, and this glimpse into how Hollywood dealt with private lives is by turns darkly funny and emotionally powerful. All Save One opens Thursday, Nov. 15 and runs through Sunday, December 9. NOTE: There is no performance on Thanksgiving (Nov. 22), but there is an added matinee performance on Friday, Nov. 23 at 2:30 pm. Press opening performance will be on Sunday, November 19 at 2:30 pm.

BWW Review: RETURN TO THE FORBIDDEN PLANET Gloriously Re-Visits the Rubicon Theatre Galaxy to Celebrate its 20th Anniversary Season
by Shari Barrett - Oct 30, 2018

The musical is a send-up of the cult classic movie and other sci-fi films and TV shows of the 1950s, melded with plot elements from "The Tempest" along with dialogue bits from multiple Shakespeare plays. That was part of the fun for me, catching so many Shakespearean quotes perfectly placed in the dialogue of Bob Carlton's musical set on a spaceship sometime in the future, featuring a galaxy of 1950's and 1960's rock and roll classics including "Wipeout," "Good Vibrations," "Great Balls of Fire," "All Shook Up," "Monster Mash" and "We Gotta Get Out of this Place." And what an outrageously fabulous band under the musical direction of Trevor Wheetman and Omar D. Brancato, both of whom rocked the house on guitars while believably playing Ensign crew members onstage.

BWW Feature: 'Meet the Actors' of CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF at Center Stage
by Charles Shubow - Oct 3, 2018

Since becoming a critic at Broadwayworld.com, I normally attend a play on opening night. Baltimore Center Stage has always had a tradition of presenting a 'Meet the Actor's Night' one day after opening. My wife and I loved to attend these because they are uniformly informative, educational, and fun. Normally audiences hear about an actor's past work, how long is the rehearsal process, how was it like to work with the director, is this your first time in Baltimore, what is like to work at Baltimore Center Stage.

New Conservatory Theatre Center Presents San Francisco Premiere Of RED SCARE ON SUNSET
by A.A. Cristi - Aug 8, 2018

In September, New Conservatory Theatre Center will kick off its 2018-2019 Season with the San Francisco premiere of the delectable, campy satire, Red Scare on Sunset. Directed by Allen Sawyer and starring San Francisco drag cabaret sensation, J. Conrad Frank, Red Scare on Sunset is full of "outrageous plot twists, chicanery and a finale that careens over the top" (LA Weekly). Written by the Tony-nominated playwright of The Tale of the Allergist's Wife and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, Charles Busch, this lavish comedy delightfully defangs the McCarthyism that took the world by storm. It's 1950's Hollywood and the Cold War is about to come knocking on silver-screen star Mary Dale's palatial front door: her husband's Method acting class is a front for the Communist party and threatens to destroy everything she holds dear. Mary must rally to defend her marriage, Hollywood and the American way in this outrageously funny and ironically timely parody.
