SOUND OFF Special Edition: 10 Biggest & Bloodiest Tony Awards Best Musical Battles
by Pat Cerasaro - May 20, 2015
Bloodshed is par for the course during Tony Awards season, especially as it reaches its peak in the last handful of weeks leading up the big annual ceremony feting theatre's best, so today we take a look back at some of the absolute most brutal and tight Tony Award races for Best Musical in history. Although comparing a group of musicals - alike as dissimilar as they may be - may be an unfair proposition in practice, there is only one way a winner is decided when the Tony Awards rolls around and it unfortunately always finds fan favorites, critical darlings and a few commercial hits vying for top honors. There can only be one Best Musical - well, except for 1960 when there were actually two mainstage entertainments given the prize; THE SOUND OF MUSIC and FIORELLO, with no less than GYPSY ending up an also-ran. Who will claim the trophy on June 7? Tune in then to see!

BWW Review: Theatre UCF's Talented Cast Makes Difficult NINE Compelling Theatre
by Matt Tamanini - Mar 26, 2015
A musical with Italian opera-inspired songs about a philandering middle-aged film director with writer's block, and the dozens of women that influence his life and work, does not seem like an obvious choice for a college theatre program to undertake. However, under the direction of Earl D. Weaver (who also choreographed), Theatre UCF sinks its collective teeth into the neurotic, misogynistic, and childish mind of Guido Contini in NINE, running through March 29th. This seven-time Tony-winning musical is based on the semi-autobiographical film '8½' by Italian director Federico Fellini. The cast of 21 women, one man, and four boys creates an evocative world that seems to hover in the realm between fantasy and reality; much like many of Fellini's films. With striking talent, breath-taking design, and artistic vision, Theatre UCF succeeds where many professional companies would (and have) faltered; despite its unsettling premise, NINE is a joyful reminder of the power of young talent in the arts.

Soho Crime to Release GBH by Ted Lewis
by BWW News Desk - Feb 11, 2015
When Ted Lewis (1940 – 1982) died at the age of 42 he left behind nine novels and the legacy of having pioneered the British noir school of fiction. Whether it was the work of late noir maverick Derek Raymond or the films of celebrated directors like Guy Ritchie and Martin McDonagh, Lewis's work permanently changed the way in which British crime stories are told. His was an uncompromising vision where the brutalities of the underworld are depicted with no embellishments. There are no heroes in a Lewis novel; no Paladin cops putting the clues together, righting wrongs. They are stories about bad people, hardened criminals, doing anything and everything to maintain their position, or more often than not, cling to some final vestige of self-respect.

BWW Review: The ANNIE Remake is Bad, but Not
Nearly as Bad as You Think
by Matt Tamanini - Dec 15, 2014
Full disclosure, I was completely ready to despise everything about the remake of ANNIE starring Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhane Wallis. In fact, I had already written the lede in my head, and let me tell you, it was scathing. But, then I saw the movie, and was pleasantly surprised by how not completely horrible it was. Yes, it will probably still rank as one of the worst big screen musical adaptations of the past decade; just above the disastrous NINE; but there was plenty to appreciate for musical theatre lovers young and old.
