'COLLECTORS III: Discerning Eyes' at New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks'COLLECTORS III: Discerning Eyes' at New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks
by BWW News Desk - Sep 20, 2014

Curated by Robert P. Stack and Vanphouthon Souvannasane of Yellow Peril Gallery, 'COLLECTORS III: Discerning Eyes' at New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks! presents early works from contemporary art collectors based in Providence (RI), New York (NY), Miami (FL), and Caguas (PR) who are ahead of the curve at distinguishing the good from the bad and sifting out the gems from the junk. 'With this exhibit, we aim to open up the conversation with regard to Whom and What,' says Stack. 'One doesn't have to wait for that winning lottery ticket to begin including art in your life. Collecting can and should commensurate with your lifestyle. Likewise,' he adds, 'collecting should not be limited to wall-hung visual art. Video, street art, light art, installation art and performance art are all collectible in today's market.' Whether the artwork was pried off the all from a dilapidated building, purchased directly from the artist, performed in front on an intimate crowd of 10 people or taken from the trunk of a fledging art dealer in the streets of SoHo, many of the works presented in 'Discerning Eyes' have never been seen by the general public until now. 'The people invited to share their collections are from ordinary backgrounds with extraordinary tastes,' notes Souvannasane. 'They include a museum guard, advertising executive, architect, real estate developer, doctor and lawyer.' 'COLLECTORS III: Discerning Eyes' will be on display at New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks! from September 26 to November 16. Several site-specific installations will be presented by Philippe Lejeune and Jessica Deane Rosner. Featured Programming includes: · Opening Reception > Friday, September 26, 6PM - 8PM Special Performance by Richard Goulis. Register online, call or visit the museum. Family members are encouraged to join their kids in experiencing these fun activities. Ages 6-9 years. · Film Screening of Herb & Dorothy > Thursday, October 23, 7PM - 9PM This documentary features Herbert and Dorothy Vogel, a former postal clerk and a librarian, who built a world-class collection of Minimal and Conceptual Art with their modest salaries. Skylight Books Presents Cory Doctorow and Jen Wang, 10/15Skylight Books Presents Cory Doctorow and Jen Wang, 10/15
by BWW News Desk - Oct 8, 2014

Skylight Books (1818 N. Vermont in Los Feliz) presents Cory Doctorow and Jen Wang on Wednesday, October 15 at 7:30pm. Skylight Books is thrilled to welcome acclaimed writer and activist Cory Doctorow and illustrator Jen Wang to present their new graphic novel, In Real Life. The story is about Anda who loves Coarsegold Online, the massively-multiplayer role playing game that she spends most of her free time on. It's a place where she can be a leader, a fighter, a hero. It's a place where she can meet people from all over the world, and make friends. Gaming is, for Anda, entirely a good thing. But things become a lot more complicated when Anda befriends a gold farmer - a poor Chinese kid whose avatar in the game illegally collects valuable objects and then sells them to players from developed countries with money to burn. This behavior is strictly against the rules in Coarsegold, but Anda soon comes to realize that questions of right and wrong are a lot less straightforward when a real person's real livelihood is at stake. From acclaimed teen author Cory Doctorow and rising star cartoonist Jen Wang, In Real Life is a sensitive, thoughtful look at adolescence, gaming, poverty, and culture-clash. Cory Doctorow is a co-editor of Boing Boing and a columnist for multiple publications including the Guardian, Locus, and Publishers Weekly. He was named one of the Web's twenty-five influencers by Forbes magazine and a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. His award-winning novel Little Brother was a New York Times bestseller. He lives in London with his wife and daughter. Jen Wang is an cartoonist and illustrator currently living in Los Angeles. Her works have appeared in the Adventure Time comics and LA Magazine. Her graphic novel Koko Be Good was published by First Second. In Real Life is her second book. The event takes place on October 15 at 7:30pm. Skylight Books is located at 1818 N. Vermont in Los Feliz (cross is Franklin). 323-660-1175. Skylight Books is a general bookstore serving the historic Los Angeles neighborhoods of Hollywood, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Downtown. Specialty Pets Inspire Kids to Learn Specialty Pets Inspire Kids to Learn
by BWW News Desk - Aug 18, 2014

All pets bring us closer to the natural world, but specialty pets, such as fish, small pets and reptiles, provide a unique way to inspire kids to learn about the world around them. As teachers and families gear up for the start of a new school year, pets can help teach kids responsibility and how to keep a routine. They can sharpen kids' math and science skills through activities such as measuring food and water, keeping track of days of the week on a calendar and studying information about their care needs. Skylight Books Celebrates Charles Bukowski's Birthday, 8/16Skylight Books Celebrates Charles Bukowski's Birthday, 8/16
by BWW News Desk - Aug 15, 2014

Skylight Books (1818 N. Vermont in Los Feliz) will celebrate what would have been the 94th birthday of literary legend Charles Bukowski (born August 16, 1920). Skylight Books, recently named one of the best bookstores in America by USA Today, will throw a party on Saturday, August 16 at 5pm. The evening will feature writers Jerry Stahl, Richard Lange, and Dan Fante, reading excerpts of their favorite Bukowski works. A birthday cake and tasty beverages will also be served, thanks to sponsor, Ecco, who just published new editions of three of Bukowski's most popular novels. Charles Bukowski is one of America's best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose, and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of three. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for fifty years. He published his first story in 1944 when he was twenty-four and began writing poetry at the age of thirty-five. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp. Jerry Stahl is the author of the narcotic memoir Permanent Midnight and Perv-a Love Story, both Los Angeles Times bestsellers, as well as the acclaimed novels Pain Killers, Plainclothes Naked, and I, Fatty. He has written extensively for film and television. Richard Lange is the author of the story collection Dead Boys, which received an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the novels This Wicked World and Angel Baby. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and his fiction has appeared in Best American Mystery Stories 2004 and 2011. He lives in Los Angeles. Dan Fante is the author of the memoir Fante, the novels 86'd, Chump Change, Mooch, and Spitting Off Tall Buildings, and several books of poetry, short stories, and plays. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and son. The event is on August 16 at 5pm. It's free and open to the public. Skylight Books is located at 1818 N. Vermont in Los Feliz (cross is Franklin), 323-660-1175. (more...)
