Singer Ruth Carlin to Return to The Laurie Beechman, 5/17

Singer/songwriter Ruth Carlin returns to the Laurie Beechman Theater this spring with an illuminating exploration of the eclectic repertoire of iconic folkie turned cabaret favorite, Judy Collins. "A Light in the Window - Songs of Judy Collins." Performances are May 17th at 7:30pm and June 12th at 7pm. The show will be directed by Scott Barnes, with accompaniment by Carlin's Musical Director, Paul Greenwood, on Piano, Dick Sarpola on bass and John Redsecker on drums. Ms. Carlin, a participant in the BMI Musical Theater Workshop as a lyricist, is a relative newcomer to cabaret who has been critically lauded for her previous shows at the Laurie Beechman (Moon Song) and appearances the Duplex and Danny's Skylight Room.

"A Light in the Window - Songs of Judy Collins" includes music from Collins' magnificent 50-year career spanning the decades of the free-loving and turbulent '60s through her embracing of the Great American Songbook and musical theater to become a contemporary favorite at Café Carlyle, the crème de la crème of New York society cabaret. Songs by Joni Mitchell, Stephen Sondheim, Randy Newman, Kurt Weill and others, as well as rarely performed original compositions by Collins herself - including "Secret Gardens" and "Since You've Asked" - will reveal multiple facets of this musical legend.

In 2013, Carlin released her debut CD, Moon Song, which includes several of her own compositions. Her previous shows included Carlin originals, as well as music by many of our greatest songwriters.

Music director Paul Greenwood is a sought after pianist, arranger, and singer who has accompanied countless performers including George Burns, Elly Stone, Jane Olivor, Art Garfunkel, Ann Hampton Callaway, Loni Ackerman, Anita Gillette, Penny Fuller, Nancy LaMott, and Sylvia McNair. Paul is a recipient of the Backstage Magazine Bistro Award, the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC) Award, and the Leonardo DaVinci Award given by the Beaux Arts Society.

Director Scott Barnes has created acts for award-winning singers Bette Midler, Rita Moreno, Kathie Lee Gifford, Barbara Brussell, Marianne Challis, and Alix Korey, and for five years directed, publicized and managed the career of the late, legendary Nancy LaMott, hailed by New York Magazine as "the best cabaret singer in New York." He received the 1994 and 1996 MAC Awards for Best Director.
