If you happened to be on the subway this month and smelled something particularly fishy (not the usually kind of subway fishy) you may have been in the same car as a mermaid. Saturday, June 17th, 2017 marked the 35th Annual Mermaid Parade on Coney Island. That's right. One day a year, all the mermaids of Coney Island are magically granted feet and march down Surf Ave and the Boardwalk until they grow their fins back and return to their watery homes… Okay maybe not quite mermaids, but close! Thousands of artists, and mermaid enthusiasts march in the parade every year. Over 3,000 Seashell clad individuals strolled, danced, and rolled down Surf Ave this year. It began pouring rain before the parade and several times during. Luckily, it is the Mermaid Parade, so a little water wasn't a problem for the marchers.

In this visual and historical celebration of New York's spirited literary past, Delia Cabe offers a fascinating field guide to all the best writerly taverns and bookish watering holes in New York City.

CHARLOTTE'S WEB is the stage adaptation of E.B. White's classic story. Adapted by Joseph Robinette, it was originally published as a play in 1983 and enjoyed Broadway run in 1989 after the addition of musical numbers by Charles Strouse. Zach Theatre's production directed by Nat Miller goes back to Robinette's original script, minus the broadway numbers, and infuses it with its own down-home charm.

THE most successful comedy farce of all time comes to Limelight Theatre this July and August. Written by Ray Cooney and directed Susan Vincent, Run For Your Wife had a nine-year run in London's West End after debuting in 1983.
The fast-paced comedy follows taxi driver John Smith, a man with two wives and two apartments, who juggles his life between the two homes on a tight schedule.
Once again, Bryant Park will be a destination for film buffs on summer nights in New York City, with an incredible line up for the 24thyear of the HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival
Apparently, due to legal issues with rights that had to be worked out, this version of YENTL, based on the short story "Yentl, the Yeshiva Boy" written by Isaac Bashevis Singer (book by Leah Napolin and Singer), cannot be referred to in its title as a musical. It all has to do with Barbra Streisand's dreary and dreadful (although some people adore it) 1983 musical film version. But, there's no confusing the two once you see this utterly charming adaptation. It adheres closely to Singer's work, while the film veers off into a direction which not only makes little sense, but also butchers the author's intent. That's a shame, but when you're writing, directing, starring, etc, you can tend to lose sight of the actual story, turning it instead into a nothing more than a self-serving star vehicle. Jill Sobule's music (she composed "I Kissed a Girl", oddly enough) provides a genre-hopping mix of styles that may, at times, seem anachronistic, but which serve the tale very well. The New Jewish Theatre's current production is a delight, and I heartily recommend it.
In a recent speech at the Festival at Hampstead Theatre, the 68-year-old playwright calls for younger, cutting edge writers to be encouraged.
