Rubicon Hosts HOLIDAY CENTRAL with 35 Seasonal Shows, Now thru 12/23

Move over Grinch; Santa Claus is coming to town and taking up residence at Rubicon Theatre in Ventura! Rubicon's November/ December HOLIDAY CENTRAL calendar offers a sparkling array of more than 35 shows and events for all ages. The festivities begin with the return of a holiday revue with six Broadway singers and a local children's chorus; followed by a late-night adult comedy presented in a cabaret setting; a poetic reading of wartime Love Letters; and culminating with an enchanting new musical from the Tony and Olivier Award-winning director of Les Miserables and Nicholas Nickleby and the creators of Jane Eyre and Daddy Long Legs, who will have a five-week residency at Rubicon during the holidays. The romantic comedy Parfumerie, adapted by E.P. Dowdall from the Hungarian play Illatszertar by Miklos Laszlo, will have a rare revival as the first theater production of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts (Lou Moore, Executive Director), for a limited, 29 performance engagement November 26 to December 22. The production, directed by Mark Brokaw, who is currently represented on Broadway with Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, centers on a romance that unfolds through Love Letters, a perfect homage to the historic Beverly Hills Post Office. Award-winning actors Bill Connington (ZOMBIE) and AnnMarie Benedict (ROBESON) appeared in a sold-out performance of Love Letters that benefitted historic Van Cortlandt House in Van Cortlandt Park. The standing-room-only crowd at the Colonial Dames Museum House gave a standing ovation for this beloved classic by A.R. Gurney. The evening was produced by Razors Edge Productions, and was directed by Dan Cordle, who has collaborated several times with Connington and Benedict. (more...)

The Delaware Theatre has announced the inaugural performance of the Play A Part series of fundraisers: A.R. Gurney's Love Letters, starring Governor and Mrs. Jack Markell. Veteran Broadway director and Tony Award nominee John Tillinger will return to Westport Country Playhouse to direct another of Alan Ayckbourn's comedies, 'Things We Do for Love,' August 19 - September 6. Tillinger has directed other Ayckbourn plays for Westport, including 'Relatively Speaking,' 'Time of My Life,' and 'How the Other Half Loves.' He also directed the theater's productions of A. R. Just when you were about to pack it in because of the miserable weather Synetic Theater has come up with a joyous, raucous celebration of love-and jazz-in its latest Shakespeare adaptation. Twelfth Night, perhaps the Bard's most beloved comedy, is realized here as a manic and slapstick-ridden romp through the Roaring Twenties. Featuring classic tunes from the early jazz era, director Paata Tsikurishvili has set the action in a silent-era Hollywood sound stage. His wife, Irina, heads a stellar cast that channels the best of 1920's screen comedians, to brilliant effect. (more...)

The producers of the Tony Award winning PIPPIN just announced that Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominee Annie Potts ("Designing Women," God of Carnage) will assume the role of "Berthe" in the production beginning Tuesday, January 21, 2014. The Property of a Distinguished American Private Collector Parts l and ll were blockbuster sales with a distressed letter from Vincent van Gogh selling for $336,000 and an internationally sought after Marilyn Monroe letter addressed to Lee Strasberg in which she wrote about the phycological toll Hollywood has taken on her.
