BWW Review: Beautifully Sung Revival of THE COLOR PURPLE Enraptures OC
by Michael Quintos - Jun 22, 2018

While its original production, as most Broadway shows go, offered the expected big sets, first-rate costumes, and impressive production values, the 2015 Tony Award-winning revival production of THE COLOR PUPLE---currently slaying audiences for a week-long stop at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through June 24---is decidedly more subdued and scaled-down by comparison, allowing the songs, the story, and the cast performances to shine on their own merits instead. The resulting show is a powerful, uplifting one, bathed in a loving, spiritual embrace that shines a light on the struggles, the insecurities, the passions, and the tenacity of African-American women living in the early decades of the 20th Century. I can say without hesitation that this revival production is an excellent way to experience this beautiful, touching, and ultimately triumphant musical.

BWW Review: LOVE NEVER DIES Closes Out TPAC's 2017-18 Season
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jun 20, 2018

We cannot help but wonder: Do peacock feathers foretell of something far more sinister and portentous than what we've seen already in both Love Never Dies and The Phantom of the Opera await our heroine in the moments to follow? We won't spoil the outcome for you, of course, but suffice it to say that those pesky peacock feathers continue to work their devilment in the intriguing production now onstage at Nashville's Tennessee Performing Arts Center through Sunday, June 24.

BWW Exclusive: John Kander Ebbs & Flows In 3/4 Time
by Harry Haun - Jun 13, 2018

In the black at the back of the Vineyard Theater during one of the final previews of The Beast in the Jungle the other night sat its composer, disguising himself as a member of the audience by dispassionately drinking in the stage action and politely applauding at the appropriate places. This is-typically-the usual battle station for the artist-in-progress. Atypically-in fact, for the first time--John Kander sat alone.

Review: THE IMMIGRANT Speaks to the Journey Faced by Those Searching for Freedom in a Strange New Land
by Shari Barrett - May 1, 2018

Director Simon Levy, who has won much acclaim for his current production of Chaim Potok's The Chosen at the Fountain Theatre, now brings his directorial insight on achieving assimilation into America to the Sierra Madre Playhouse's production of THE IMMIGRANT, written by Mark Harelik about his grandfather's struggle to survive as the only Jewish immigrant to settle in Hamilton, Texas in 1909. The play is a timely and touching meditation on parents and children, newcomers and natives, Christians and Jews, and on what it means to be an American.

BWW Review: Joshua Henry Thrills in Jack O'Brien's Drastically Edited Version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's CAROUSEL
by Michael Dale - Apr 13, 2018

During the first half of the 20th Century, there was no artist as important to the development of American musical theatre from strictly light entertainment to a legitimate dramatic art form that addressed controversial issues and exposed the country's uglier norms than bookwriter and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II.

BWW Review: Mesmerizing, Gorgeous THE COLOR PURPLE: THE MUSICAL Makes Stop at Civic Center
by Robert Barossi - Jan 4, 2018

Any truly great piece of theater (or film or art or music or a book) is both timely and timeless, reaching out across many generations and diverse populations to deliver a universal human message that anyone can understand and relate to. You would be hard pressed to find a better example of this than The Color Purple: The Musical, currently making a stop along on its Broadway tour at the Civic Center Music Hall in downtown Oklahoma City.

BWW Review: THE COLOR PURPLE at The Fisher Theatre is a Powerful and Emotion-Filled Production!
by Katie Laban - Nov 10, 2017

The Color Purple, the 2016 Tony Award-winning musical adaptation from Alice Walker's best-selling novel, is currently appearing at the Fisher Theatre in Detroit. The powerful production is taking the city over with its dynamite cast and their emotional performances leaving the audience in awe by the time the performance finished. This is the stunning re-imagining of an epic story about a young woman's journey to love and triumph in the American South. With a soul-raising score of jazz, gospel, ragtime, and blues, The Color Purple gives and exhilarating new spirit to the Pulitzer Prize-winning story of Celie and the people in her life.
