ATC Opens Season with BACKWARDS IN HIGH HEELS, 10/7

Ginger Rogers danced her way into our hearts in the arms of Fred Astaire, setting the gold standard for grace and elegance on the silver screen. In her surprising true-life story, we follow her from the vaudeville stage at the age of 15 through her ascension to Hollywood goddess. BACKWARDS IN HIGH HEELS tells the story of this legendary dancer, singer and actress through the music of some of the 20th century's greatest composers and with plenty of dance numbers worthy of the Hollywood icon. BACKWARDS IN HIGH HEELS plays in Tucson at the Temple of Music and Art from September 10 through October 2. The Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical A CHORUS LINE leaps, turns and taps its way to center stage at the Marriott Theatre, 10 Marriott Drive, previewing September 1, opening Sunday, September 12 at 5 p.m. and running through October 31. A CHORUS LINE is directed by Mark Lococo and choreographed by Rachel Rockwell. The iconic musical stars Broadway veteran Mara Davi as Cassie, who starred in the Broadway revival. She has also been seen on Broadway in WHITE CHRISTMAS as Judy and in The Drowsy Chaperone as Janet, and boasts multiple Off-Broadway and regional credits. A CHORUS LINE is the longest running American musical in Broadway history, and is conceived and originally choreographed and directed by Michael Bennett, featuring a book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban. Second Stage Theatre (Carole Rothman, Artistic Director) has announced that Zach Braff, Bobby Cannavale, Sutton Foster, and Ari Graynor will co-star in the world premiere comedy TRUST, written by Paul Weitz, directed by Peter DuBois. Mr. Weitz returns to Second Stage Theatre, where his plays Privilege and Show People premiered in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Directed by Peter DuBois, who staged Second Stage's acclaimed production of Becky Shaw, TRUST will begin previews on Friday, July 23 at Second Stage Theatre (305 West 43rd street) and officially open on Thursday, August 12. Most people will remember Carson Kressley from television's 'Queer Eye For The Straight Guy'. He was the more outrageous of the so-called Fab Five and was the show's fashion guru. Talking to him on the phone proved that he's not exactly like that. At least not nowadays. He proved to be genial, intelligent and much more of a sweetheart than anyone would expect from his television image. He was eager to chat about his background, his stage acting and his participation in 'Broadway Takes The Runway' which takes place on October 4th. (more...)

Tommy Tune Awards Participants Announced

Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) is thrilled to announce the 45 Houston area schools competing in the ninth annual Tommy Tune Awards. Developed by TUTS in 2002, the Tommy Tune Awards honor musical theatre excellence at the high school level, celebrating outstanding student achievement in 15 categories. During the 2010-2011 school year, a team of Houston-based theatre professionals will evaluate the participating high school productions and announce the winners at a Tony Awards-style ceremony to be held April 20, 2011 at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. The event will feature spotlight numbers from the nominated shows, as well as award presentations to the performers, directors, choreographers, orchestras and designers, who have defined excellence throughout 2010 - 2011. The Best Leading Actor and Actress will go on to compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City this coming June. (more...)

Although there's been no official announcement yet, while talking to the Rockland Journal News about the upcoming ELF muscial, Thomas Meehan tells the paper that 'In casting Sebastian Arcelus ('Good Vibrations') as Buddy, Meehan says director Casey Nicholaw didn't want someone who would deliver a Ferrell impersonation.
