Oliver! - 1979 - Regional (US) History , Info & More

Freely adapted from Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens

Nothing is as thrilling on the stage as a well-crafted tale, and Oliver! is just such a show. Based on the Dickens novel, it engages with its pathos and drama, while delighting everyone with the musical numbers "Food, Glorious Food," "I'd Do Anything," "Where is Love?," "Consider Yourself," "As Long As He Needs Me," and "Who Will Buy." Dickens' characters are brought to life-perhaps larger than life-with all their facets glowing in this production.

BWW Reviews: Musical Theater Heritage's OLIVER! Steals the Hearts of Kansas City
by Steve Wilson - Dec 7, 2014

It amazes me how a musical performed with little or no scenery, props, or costumes, and on a small intimate stage can become one of the preeminent shows of the season. That is exactly what Oliver! accomplished on opening night Saturday December 6 at the Off Center Theatre in Kansas City. This achievement speaks volumes to the creative team of Musical Theater Heritage that labored to near perfection.

BWW Reviews: Lyric Music Theater Essays OLIVER! Revival
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Nov 24, 2014

In this season of ubiquitous productions of A Christmas Carol, a production of Lionel Bart's Oliver! comes as a welcome Dickensian alternative. South Portland's Lyric Music Theater has mounted a very respectable revival of Bart's 1960 musical based on Oliver Twist. A curious but catchy melange of dark drama and vaudeville, Oliver! survives in its trio of principal characters, Fagin, Nancy, and Sykes, and the memorable music Bart has written for them.

by Stephen Sorokoff - Nov 10, 2014

Singer and Broadway star T. Oliver Reid leads what he describes as "a club hopping journey through the swanky clubs and low down joints of 1934 Harlem," featuring the music of Duke Ellington, Harold Arlen, Andy Razaf, and more. In this new show, Reid performs each number with the unmistakable dramatic flair of a musical theater veteran, and he also provides an overview of the clubs, musicians, and social context of the music.

BWW My Two Cents: Has LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER Become the Most Important News Show on Television?
by Jennifer McHugh - Nov 7, 2014

I remember listening to John Oliver on the Nerdist Podcast back in 2011. Chris Hardwick asked him if for some reason any of the major news networks approached him about a job if he would be interested in working for a serious news organization. John Oliver laughed and said he would not as he was not a journalist. My, what a difference three years can make.
