BWW Exclusive: Wendell Ferguson isn't a Grinch, Just a Very Naughty Boy on 'Cranky Christmas'
by Dennis Kucherawy - Dec 23, 2014

Singer-guitarist Wendell Ferguson is the anti-Claus. And I was reminded how much I enjoy his Yuletied parodies earlier this month at the CBC taping of this year's Royal Canadian Air Farce New Year's Eve comedy special. Remember the kid in the horror movie 'The Omen' who turns out to be the anti-Christ? Gregory Peck checked the lad's scalp and found three sixes - the sign of the beast - in a circle? Well, if you were to check Wendell's scalp, you'd find three 'Hos' in a circle instead!

BWW Interviews: Brandon Jovanovich Finds the Humanity in LADY MACBETH's Bad Boy
by Richard Sasanow - Nov 13, 2014

“To be blunt, Sergei is not a nice guy,” says tenor Brandon Jovanovich, talking about his current role at the Metropolitan Opera in Dmitri Shostakovich's LADY MACBETH OF MTENSEK. “He's the kind of fellow who's jovial and friendly one minute…and then you hear he's robbed a store. He uses and abuses people--we all know someone like that, don't we?” he adds, laughing.

BWW Interview: Laurence O'Keefe Talks the Future of Harvard's Revised BAT BOY; Will It Fly Back to NYC?
by Nicole Rosky - Nov 2, 2014

The Office for the Arts at Harvard recently announced that its upcoming undergraduate production of the cult hit Bat Boy: The Musical will debut new scenes and songs by the show's original writers. Composer/lyricist (and Harvard alum) Laurence O'Keefe and bookwriters Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming have been holding writing sessions and workshops at Harvard, working directly with the undergraduate cast and crew to develop the new material. Bat Boy is the story of a feral half-bat/half-boy, originally invented by the Weekly World News supermarket tabloid. The musical comedy's premiere Off-Broadway in 2001 garnered rave reviews and the show has received hundreds of productions worldwide, but the three writers have nonetheless continued to work on the show. O'Keefe recently took the time to chat with BroadwayWorld about revisiting the project and his intentions for the show at Harvard and beyond. Check out the full interview below!

BWW Recap: Wins and Losses Explored on This Week's MODERN FAMILY
by Matt Smith - Oct 16, 2014

This week's episode moves the Dunphys from their house to “the last room at a hotel nearby”; as Claire explains in the opening confessional, they have to vacate the house — for one night — as it's treated for mold. Claire's thinking positively about the family-of-five sharing a room — again, it's only for one night — though a cut to the hotel shows us their stay's been delayed; it's day five, and it's looking anything but the positive experience Claire was hoping for: Luke and Alex butt heads when he interferes with her cello practice, while Claire and Haley quarrel about sharing WiFi usage; Luke then turns on a blender which sets off the dogs in the room next door (which they can hear due to the ever-cliché paper-thin walls). Oh, yes. And in the middle of all this, Phil's found a Charleston Chew, which — to give you a clearer idea of the state of the motel (if you couldn't already tell) — advertises a contest from 2005. The night doesn't get any better, wherein the various members of the family have to climb over each other to exit the bed; except for Luke, who sleeps in the tub. With the single flush of a toilet, the neighboring dogs begin to bark, and the cycle begins again. Yes, the humor here is a bit forced, but it does set up a good storyline, which I'm interested to see played out.

BWW Interviews: Grammy Nominated Songstress JANE MONHEIT Talks About Saban Appearance, October 19
by Don Grigware - Oct 9, 2014

Singer Jane Monheit will appear October 19 at the Saban Theatre, Beverly Hills singing the jazz of Judy Garland. Her latest CD - there are 9 - is called the heart of the matter (cover pictured above). Since high school, she has been dazzling audiences world-wide with her beautiful multi-ranged voice. For a young singer to concentrate on jazz and the classics is in itself quite extraordinary in this day and age. Monheit graduated with a BA from the Manhattan School of Music winning many prizes and is a two-time Grammy nominee. She is married to drummer Rick Montalbano Jr. and has one little boy.

BWW Recap: SURVIVOR- BLOOD VS WATER 10/8; Full Review!
by Kara McCoy - Oct 8, 2014

Last week the island saw possibly one of the silliest game moves since J'Tia's rice dump--well okay, maybe it's not quite the same; Season 28's ricegate wasn't really a game move, per se, more of a temper tantrum. Val, on the other hand--how she could have possibly thought lying would actually help her game is still a mystery to me. This is SURVIVOR, after all. SURVIVOR! Lying on SURVIVOR? Who lies on SURVIVOR? Oh. Right. Everybody. Well, still. Let Val's prompt dismissal last week serve as a cautionary tale to the remaining contestants. If you're going to lie, be smart about it. Not silly. Heck, lie about mildly believable things at least. Do not, I repeat, do not, lie about having multiple immunity idols by day five. Inevitably, someone will call you out on it, and then you'll just be up a creek without an idol. Sorry, Val. It would have been fun to see what other kooky fabrications you could have cooked up. Maybe your husband Jeremy will have some similar tricks up his sleeve. I can only hope.

BWW Recap: Things Aren't Looking Good for The Doctor, Clara on DOCTOR WHO
by Kaitlin Milligan - Oct 4, 2014

Reflections: POTTED POTTER, Twice The Fun
by Oliver Oliveros - Oct 4, 2014

I was able to watch the unstoppable, nearly nine-year-old touring production of two-time Olivier Award nominees Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner's parody POTTED POTTER: The Unauthorized Harry Experience twice: the first time was at Little Shubert Theatre Off-Broadway, which starred Clarkson and Turner, in 2012; the second time was at Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in Manila, which now stars British actors Benjamin Stratton and James Percy, last Tuesday.

BWW Interview: FIGARO's Isabel Leonard -- The Girl, the Boy and the Voice
by Richard Sasanow - Sep 29, 2014

'Cherubino is crazy in some ways, in good ways,' says Isabel Leonard, who is singing the role of the young male page in the Almaviva household in the Metropolitan Opera's new Richard Eyre production of LE NOZZE DI FIGARO. 'He sees everything in Technicolor, eyes wide open, taking everything in, not missing a second that he could possibly enjoy in his life.”'

BWW Recap: Black Jack's Back, There's Gonna be Some Trouble on OUTLANDER
by Kara McCoy - Sep 13, 2014

This week's episode of OUTLANDER picks up right where we left off, with the young Jeremy Foster, flanked by his English comrades, asking Claire if she is with the Mackenzies by her own volition. Brief dramatic pause. Claire smiles warmly, gives a big ol' “Yup!” and it's another crisis averted. Sort of. Foster's happy for her and everything, but his commander will still want to see her. Y'know. Just to be sure. So off Claire goes with the gang of Brits, and she finds it comforting to finally be surrounded by her “own people” for the first time since falling through the stones, being looked at with sympathy rather than suspicion. Lord Oliver Thomas greets her happily, delighted by her tales of robbery and murder. No, like, really delighted. It's kind of weird, actually. He's insufferable, dissing Dougal and his clansmen right to his face. I mean, he even makes fun of his accent, and I'm sorry, Lord Thomas, but literally everyone loves a Scottish accent, so excuse you. Claire politely defends the Highlanders, and is ultimately rewarded with an offer of an escort back to Inverness. Oh, Ms. Beauchamp, could the day get any better?

BWW Recap: BOARDWALK EMPIRE: Flashbacks, Chain Gangs, and Cuba, Oh My!
by Jessica Naftaly - Sep 8, 2014

Okay so here we are! Episode one of the final season of Boardwalk Empire entitled 'Golden Days for Boys and Girls'! It kicked off in an interesting and beautifully visual fashion as we are met with an opening shot of boys diving for coins underwater. The cinematography in that scene, and in the entire episode is notably gorgeous. Voicing over this stunning imagery is a poem read aloud by a female voice. “Be honest and true, boys! /Whatever you do, boys /Let this be your motto through life.” This poem bookends the episode as it's featured during the flashbacks (yes flashbacks!) of young Nucky Thompson throughout the episode.

BWW Reviews: OH MY GOODNESS… IT'S PAUL LYNDE Journeys Back to the Wild Life of the Hollywood Squares Star
by Shari Barrett - Sep 1, 2014

Directed by John Hall and based in part on Lynde's life and 1976 touring show, OH MY GOODNESS…IT'S PAUL LYNDE is produced with the full approval and cooperation of the estate of Paul Lynde, starring Michael Airingon who channels the late entertainer both in appearance, voice and attitude to a tee. The show traces Lynde's Life from his humble beginnings to his rise to stardom as one of America's funniest and biggest stars on television in the 70's, featuring voice-overs by the Master of the Hollywood Squares himself, Peter Marshall.

BWW Recap: OUTLANDER Invites You to Join 'The Gathering'
by Kara McCoy - Aug 30, 2014

The episode begins with a frantic Claire running through the woods, darting around trees and panting heavily, as a sentry keeps his watchful post from above. It's all wracked with tension and suspense, particularly when we recall Claire's ominous testimony at the end of last week's installment: get back to Craigh na Dun, or “die trying.” Run, Claire, run! we simple viewers implore—for all of ten seconds, until we realize, oh but of course, she's just playing a game. We, and the sentry, relax as Ms. Beauchamp emerges from the trees, a gaggle of pint-sized Scots eagerly giggling at her heels. Claire is smoothly transitioning into life at Castle Leoch, it seems—but as always, Claire is really fixated on just one thing: freedom. And no matter how much fun she and the wee bairns appear to be having, she's using the game to better explore the castle grounds. For escape routes. Oh, girl, that is clever.

BWW Interviews: James Naughton Talks THE WORD, CITY OF ANGELS Reunion
by Matt Tamanini - Aug 15, 2014

In the new film 'The Word,' a man's otherwise perfect life is destroyed when his son is kidnapped and murdered. He finds himself torn between avenging his son's death and moving on with his now hollow existence. Two-time Tony-winner James Naughton plays F.B.I. agent Mike Sheehy, who is tasked with hunting down the boy's killer. 'The Word' opens in select cities, including New York and Los Angeles, this week. Last week, I spoke to Naughton about the film, his iconic role as the original Billy Flynn in long-running 'Chicago' revival, being a part of a family of performers, and whether or not there is any truth to the rumors of a 'City of Angels' reunion concert.

BWW Blog: Jesse Swimm of Goodspeed's FIDDLER ON THE ROOF - The Day Off
by Guest Blogger: Jesse Swimm - Jul 22, 2014

Boy have I been looking forward to this one all week long, lol. This was an especially tough week for a lot of us as we not only had our normal 8 show week, we also had some understudy rehearsal on Thursday and Friday to be ready if the chance arose when we would have to go on. Don't get me wrong, I really do appreciate being able to work on the material in a different way and it is always a treat when you get to hear different interpretations of the story. However, with all that said and done I was still extremely exhausted at the amount of work we had been doing. So the prospect of two days off was a spectacular one. It started out rather a bit intense and not necessarily what one would think would be a relaxing morning. However getting to the gym is something important and actually was the perfect way for us to gear up for our epic day off. Since I have started this job, and a bit before, I have been trying to keep up with a regular routine of gym as well as eating a much more strict diet. So far it has been going well, but there are definitely those times where I would love a large pizza and some beer, ha!!!
