The new version of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, opening at the Segerstrom Center in Costa Mesa on August 5th, differs from the original. Broadway World spoke to Katie Travis, who plays Christine Daae about her take on the character and the production.
Written by James Reach, adapted from the 1955 teleplay by Rod Serling of Twilight Zone fame, PATTERNS, takes an insightful look at corporate politics, examining just how much it takes for an individual to crack in order to succeed financially. Directed with great skill and insight into human foibles and behavior by Jules Aaron (one of Los Angeles' most honored directors, the recipient of over thirty awards for his work, directing over 250 stage and television productions), with a brilliant cast and design team at Theatre 40, the play depicts the emotional wreckage that corporate culture can inflict on individuals to bring them into the fold.
Author J. Ladd Johnson found herself disheartened in her quest to find love. Her core beliefs about love, a fairy tale version, led to poor decisions in choosing a mate on her own terms. Her book is about her personal journey to find the right man. 'Loved as Promised' (published by Lulu) shows how a relationship with God first is essential to finding love the way God intended.
'I never wanted to do anything else!' the dynamic blonde character actress tells Broadway World one recent afternoon on a break in her rehearsals for Maine State Music Theatre's Music Man, which opened July 16. Charis Leos is currently playing Eulalie, the Mayor of River City's wife in her third with the company role this summer season; she has already delighted audiences as Georgie in The Full Monty and Sister Mary Patrick in Sister Act, and she looks forward to undertaking Frau Blucher in Young Frankenstein in what will be her tenth season in Brunswick. Leos has strong ties to MSMT, to Artistic Director Curt Dale Clark, and to director Marc Robin (Music Man/Young Frankenstein), and she says she 'loves the quality of work we do here. A lot has to do with the community which is so incredibly supportive. This is the best-paid vacation ever. Of course, it it's a great deal of hard work because the schedule is so compact, but I am having a wonderful time!'

Harwich Junior Theater, a group that boasts productions of ten plays and musicals each year, numerous community outreach and educational programs and a variety of other annual events, is sure to amaze audiences with its current production. Performing such a well-known musical work and presenting it in a new, exciting way that can appeal to children and adults alike (and children were having their share of fun in the audience, which is always a wonderful thing to see) is a daunting task for any creative team; this is especially true because of how vibrant and exhilarating a musical The Music Man is, and keeping that constant energy alive throughout a rather lengthy production is no easy thing to do. It is without doubt, though, that Director Ethan Paulini truly got it right with this production.
Today, BroadwayWorld kicks off a brand new interview series titled HOW I GOT THE JOB shining a special solo spotlight on a performer in which they share candid recollections and revisit the point at which they became involved with a particular project on their resume, whether it be stage piece, film or TV project...
To kick off the series, we are talking to an internationally recognized stage and screen star CELEBRATED for her iconic originating role in the popular stage musical and subsequent feature film adaptation of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, the fiercely idiosyncratic Ellen Greene. Opening up about her experiences in landing that unforgettable part, Greene also previews what audiences can expect from her return to the stage as art of the hotly anticipated Encores! Off-Center mounting of the musical co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal at City Center later this week. Additionally, Greene reflects on some of her other standout appearances over the years, such as the acclaimed 1976 New York Shakespeare Festival production of THE THREEPENNY OPERA and David Rabe's IN THE BOOM BOOM ROOM at the Public Theater, not to mention the legendary cult musical RACHAEL LILY ROSENBLOOM (AND DON'T YOU EVER FORGET IT), plus her notable ongoing collaboration with TV mastermind Bryan Fuller on HEROES, PUSHING DAISIES and HANNIBAL and much more.
What a whirlwind Liza has been on this season! And unfortunately for her, it doesn't get ease up in the final installment - if anything, it's even more crazy!! As she tries to patch things up with Josh (remember, she came clean with him at the end of last week's episode), she's hit with another huge roadblock at work, which puts her in another awkward position which may not only lead to legal trouble, but commands her to face compromising her moral values. Though there are no literal fireworks present, it wouldn't be inaccurate to say this episode's an explosive finale, capping off a season of blunders and hijinks as only the YOUNGER writers can create.
At a celebration lunch was held at New York City's swanky Four Seasons Restaurant earlier this week, May 26, in honor of Chita Rivera's Tony nominated performance in Broadway's THE VISIT. Hosted by Liz Smith and Edgar Bronfman, Jr., a slew of special guests came to celebrate the Broadway icon. Scroll down to see what they had to say about Chita, and click here for all the photos from the luncheon!
So, here we are. After nine months and 23 episodes, we've arrived at the MODERN FAMILY season finale. And the Dunphy-Delgado-Tucker-Pritchetts are going out with a bang, capping two season-long story arcs — the first, of course, being Alex's send-off to college, which we/she has been preparing for all season; and the second being the long-awaited climax of the Andy/Haley relationship (and climax it does!!). Of course, just because they have to — I mean, come on, it's MODERN FAMILY! — the episode's peppered with a variety of subplots, showcasing the rest of the clan at their very best. Wanna see what I mean? Just read on. :-)
Screen Actors Guild Foundation and Broadway World have partnered for filmed Conversations Q&A series to recognize and celebrate the vibrant theatre community in New York City and the union actors who aspire to have a career on the stage and screen. The most recent conversation featured 2015 Tony nominee Kristin Chenoweth, moderated by BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge, discussing how things are going at On the Twentieth Century, how she looks back on some of her past shows like Wicked and You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, and so much more. Check out Kristin's thoughts on her demanding new role below and watch the full interview here!
I claim to not be sentimental or a romantic, but if I told you I didn't tear up a few times during this finale episode, I would be lying. There was a little something for everyone in this one and shippers of at least one couple left the evening more than satisfied.
Berkshire Theatre Group and Artistic Director/CEO, Kate Maguire, are thrilled to announce the casting for Berkshire Theatre Group's 87th summer season.
Kersten Rodau is a well-known performer in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul theatre scene with countless shows to her credit, but perhaps she's earned her PhD in musical theatre by being a cast member of seven of the Ordway Center's BROADWAY SONGBOOK series.
Today we are talking to one of the biggest stars to break out of Broadway and make a major mark on the music scene in recent years thanks to her hit album HUNTER and an ever-expanding series of incredibly impressive viral music videos, the soulful and passionate Morgan James. Discussing the impetus behind many of the selections on HUNTER as well as sharing stories of how the album all came together, James generously details the process in creating her first album of original material while looking ahead to this week's live concert event at the Highline Ballroom which will showcase many of the standouts from the album as well as some special surprises. Furthermore, James opens up about her growing series of music videos covering many classic pop and R&B songs, both vintage and brand new, as well as the worldwide acclaim she has received for them - enough to inspire a recent European tour with innovative music collective Postmodern Jukebox, as matter of fact. Plus, James gives the 411 on her theatre background and Juilliard training while also reflecting on some of her Broadway appearances in musicals such as MOTOWN, GODSPELL, THE ADDAMS FAMILY and WONDERLAND while also commenting on some dream roles she would ideally enjoy pursuing in the future, near and far. All of that, thoughts on social media, favorite albums and much, much more!

Colm Feore - seasoned actor of stage and screen - guest stars tonight as Doctor Dulmacher, the physician who harvests body parts from the captors sharing dungeon space with Fish Mooney. Det. James Gordon goes into action pulling back the secrets of the Gotham police commissioner and meets guest star Nicholle Tom as a girl with a secret. Bruce Wayne offers clues that point to Wayne Enterprises' corrupt board of directors. And D.A. Harvey Dent makes his return to GOTHAM. Just four episodes from the end of season one of GOTHAM. We will see what gets wrapped up and what wounds will still be open tonight.
Tonight on BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, Boyle's dad and Gina's mom get married! On 'Boyle-Linetti Wedding' the entire squad is given a job to fulfill for the ceremony. Unfortunately, Jake and Amy get sidetracked chasing down a criminal and Terry struggles to officiate the wedding. Nick Cannon also returns tonight as Marcus, Rosa's boyfriend.
Coincidentally, Ocean State Theatre Company happens to be presenting back-to-back productions which are two-person shows. The first one, The Meeting, was a serious drama depicting the fictional meeting between Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. The second one is their current production of a much different show, the musical love story, The Last Five Years. While the first one had a noticeable but minor difference in the charisma and stage presence of its two performers, the second one is an example of just how obviously wide that gap can become and just how much the difference between its two leads can impact a production.
You know how the story goes: Boy gets married, other boy gets married, both marriages fall apart, both boys move in together, one boy is sloppy while the other boy is neat, hilarious hijinks ensue. Chances are that you've seen/heard about one of the incarnations of THE ODD COUPLE, whether it was the movie starring Walter Matthau (CHARADE, GRUMPY OLD MEN) and Jack Lemmon (SOME LIKE IT HOT, GRUMPY OLD MEN), the tv series back in the 70's starring Jack Klugman (QUINCY M.E., 12 ANGRY MEN) and Tony Randall (PILLOW TALK, DOWN WITH LOVE), or the original play by Neil Simon on which all the subsequent versions were all based. Regardless, Felix Unger and Oscar Madison are back, this time played by Thomas Lennon (NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, MEMENTO) and Matthew Perry (FRIENDS, 17 AGAIN). I find both of these actors extremely funny, so it will be interesting to see how this all pans out. Considering Perry's recent string of cancellations, he could really use a winner.
Happy Valentine's Day! Oh, it's not a happy Valentine's Day for you? Well, I'm sorry, but as you are probably all to aware of then, misery loves COMPANY; and yes, I am talking about the revolutionary 1970 Sondheim musical. Like all things, the lonliness, anger, and depression that is sometimes associated with being alone on this most Hallmark of holiudays is always made better by show tunes.
Ted Sod: Can you tell us about your role as Associate Artistic Director and how that manifests itself at Roundabout?
Happy Snowmageddon 2015, my friends! Tonight, on a very special episode of 'Patti Watches 'The Bachelor,' Patti sits on her couch, cozy in her pink fuzzy onesie, drinking a bottle glass of champagne with her fiancee who may or may not like this show more than she does. Rehearsal was canceled for tomorrow on account of the blizzard that has fallen upon the East Coast (come see us in 'Lady, Be Good!' at Encores! City Center, February 4-8!), so we have hunkered down with our staples (ice cream, wine, cheese, candy, chips) ready to watch some bitches be cray. Here we go!
On this week's episode of BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, Eva Longoria returns as Sophia, Jake's girlfriend. However, their relationship is in trouble, because Sophia's boss, played by Chris Parnell, won't give her good cases if she's dating a cop. So, of course, Jake shows up unannounced to one of Sophia's work events to try and smooth things over with her boss. What could go wrong? Also in ' The Defense Rests,' Wuntch needs Captain Holt's help for a job recommendation. Read more for the full recap, but beware of SPOILERS!
