The true story of Haskell Harelik, a young Russian Jew who instead of passing through Ellis Island, enters through Galveston and struggles to assimilate into a rural community in Texas. Commonly referred to as the 'Galveston Movement,' Harelik's story begins like so many others in 1909, peddling a pushcart full of bananas and wares - but his fate is changed forever when he asks Milton, a small-town banker, and his Southern Baptist wife for a drink of water from their well. Harelik's compelling story of opportunity, success and the challenges of educating a new community is the essence of the American experience.
The little OPERA theatre of ny will present a FREE concert of scenes from American operas in collaboration with Bronx Opera and operamission. The concert will showcase the diversity of music and stories written for the opera stage by both native born and immigrant composers and librettists. Effie Marie Sojak Rosene passed away early Mother's Day morning, May 12, 2019. She was born November 10, 1932 to Frank Sojak and Christine Lezak Sojak, Czech immigrant farmers, in the Frydek/Simonton area of Texas. She grew up in the Rio Grande Valley with 15 brothers and sisters and graduated from Rio Hondo High School. She attended St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Houston. She was working as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital when she met the love of her life, Willard George (Bill) Rosene.

The National Museum of American Jewish History (NMAJH) is pleased to announce its next special exhibition Sara Berman's Closet: a small and monumental story by Maira Kalman and Alex Kalman. An installation of one immigrant woman's belongings as re-created by Sara's daughter and grandson - the acclaimed artist and writer Maira Kalman and designer and curator Alex Kalman - the project will feature the Museum's first-ever public art installation on its Kimmel Plaza, on the corner of 5th and Market Streets. An accompanying art exhibition will continue in the Museum's special exhibition gallery, featuring new paintings by Maira Kalman and new sculptures by Alex Kalman and will include interventions throughout the core exhibition, as well as in-person appearances by the Kalmans throughout the run. Sara Berman's Closet will be on view April 5 through September 2, 2019.

On the heels of the iTunes release of the critically acclaimed documentaryMATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A. a previously unreleased song and music video have emerged from M.I.A's archives. 'Reload' was recorded in 2004, before the release in M.I.A.'s debut album Galang. M.I.A. and Elastica's Justine Frischmann were experimenting with the Roland 505 beat machine and 'Reload' is the result; Justine wrote the beats and Maya (she had not yet established her pop star persona 'M.I.A.') wrote the lyrics. The music video was shot on a handheld video camera in Justine Frischmann's basement, and it features Maya and her friends Rudy, Marsha and Deborah.
