Utah Shakespeare Festival Holds Fall 2012 Food Drive Today, 9/14

Today, September 14, representatives from the Iron County Care and Share will be in the lobby of the Randall L. Jones Theatre accepting food donations to kick off the ninth annual fall food drive at the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Over the years the Festival has been able to donate over 10,000 pounds of food to the Iron County Care and Share, helping to feed less-fortunate families during the holiday season.

Local residents can participate by donating six items of nonperishable food per individual on the day of the performance directly to the Festival and receive a half price ticket to any Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday performance. This offer is also valid on Friday, September 14 as a special for the kick off event. Food donation barrels will be located in the Randall L. Jones Theatre lobby next to the ticket window.

“The Festival’s food drive allows local residents to have a fun, affordable evening out while supporting the arts and helping families in need,” said Kami Terry Paul, Festival marketing director. “This year we hope to raise over 2,500 pounds of food in order to serve people in need.”

Residents of Iron, Washington, Kane, Garfield, and Beaver counties in Utah are eligible for the discount, as well as patrons from Lincoln County, Nevada. All residents should bring proof of residency and six non-perishable food items for each discounted ticket they wish to purchase. This offer is good Tuesday through Thursday on the day of the performance only. There is a limit of four discounted tickets per resident I.D.

According to the Iron County Care and Share, “food drives raise awareness of hunger in the community, collect food for people in need and play an essential role in the fight against hunger.”

Tickets for the Festival’s 2012 season, which will run until October 27, 2012, are now on sale. The fall season includes Les Misèrables, carrying through from the summer season; Marie Jones’ touching play, back by popular demand, Stones in His Pockets, as well as Shakespeare’s classic drama, Hamlet. The Iron County Care & Share was founded in 1984 by a group of local churches of different denominations to address the issue of hunger in our community. Originally opened as a food bank, the agency soon grew to include an emergency shelter program. Working with partners in the community, neighboring counties, and in the state, the Iron County Care & Share is able to help homeless and low-income individuals and families work toward self-sufficiency. The Iron County Care & Share are located at 900 North 222 West Cedar City, Utah.
