The trouble with a Martin McDonagh play performed at The Gamm, is that it’s inevitably going to be too good. McDonagh is a master of inky black comedy, and The Gamm have now presented five of his plays over the years, so it’s been fascinating to watch Gamm regulars find new places in the McDonagh-verse, and really lean into the sinister aspects of these plays. However, for the person who has to write a review of this nearly-flawless show, it’s a somewhat daunting experience. How do you describe a show so dark using only positive adjectives? If McDonagh reads this review, will he dismiss it as hackneyed fluff? Thankfully, he will never read this, so I can say unequivocally–this show is great, go see it.
What did our critic think of THE CHILDREN at Gamm Theatre? What would you do if faced with the chance to make a difference that would risk your way of life in your twilight years? Would you go or take the safer route?
What did our critic think of BAD JEWS at Gamm Theatre? When a beloved grandfather passes away, leaving behind a sentimental family heirloom, what would your family do to possess it? Chances are, not to the extent of this family!

In AN OCTOROON, Jacobs-Jenkins seems to delight in taking audiences on a shock-and-awe tour through America’s history and present. In turns horrifying and hilarious, this work manages to elicit almost every emotion a human being can feel as it burrows into your psyche.
Due to ongoing concerns surrounding COVID-19 and public safety, The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre (The Gamm) is rescheduling the start of Season 36 from this September to January 2021. A revised calendar for the full 5-play lineup will be announced soon.
In the forty years since its debut, Sam Shepard's 'True West' has been lauded for its stark portrayal of the duality of the American soul. The Gamm Theatre has mounted a visually compelling production with penetrating performances that slice to the heart of Shepard's darkly comedic vision.
The Gamm is currently showing two short plays back-to-back, with all female casts. ESCAPED ALONE by Caryl Churchill (New England Premiere) is a tight one-act that raises far more questions than it answers. COME AND GO by Samuel Beckett is so brief it almost feels like it's over before it begins, but is strangely haunting. Overall, it's a combination of works that are very well-acted, but also feel somewhat jarring in a way that doesn't quite pay off.
