PETE has an incredible summer of performance ahead. Join us at the Northwest New Works festival in Seattle (June 9-11), or Summerfest at CoHo Theater in Portland (July 13-16) for a look at our vodka-soaked Cold War tragi-comedy Deception Unit.

Deception Unit is a kitchen-sink tragi-comedy, a series of overlapping domestic narratives driven by the notion that our lives are fundamentally a series of well-constructed lies. What happens when we lose track of our tidy narratives- the lies we tell ourselves, each other and the world- and truth exists only in the eye of the beholder? Examining the geopolitical through the lens of the quotidian, Deception Unit creates a world in which the audience's perception becomes the principal arbiter of what is "true".

Have we been fooling ourselves all along?

PORTLAND EXPERIMENTAL THEATRE ENSEMBLE

PETE (Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble) is a company of theatre artists whose mission is to make new plays in a collaborative way. We train together and teach our work. We are committed to creative rigor, to the cultivation and enrichment of our local arts ecology, and to connecting with a diverse audience. We challenge established notions with innovative forms of practice, presentation and organization. We do all this to achieve a radical kind of presence shared between audience and artist in the performance event.

Since its inception in 2011, PETE has produced work at the Risk/Reward Festival, On the Boards, Caldera, and Portland Center Stage's JAW Festival as well as in theaters throughout Portland. The company has developed and produced eight major pieces, four of which were world premieres of original work developed by the company. These works include drammy-award winning R3, a radical re-imagining of Shakespeare's Richard III, Song of the Dodo, a provocative devised work blending vocal lamentation and themes of environmental extinction, and the Journey Play is the Whole Thing, a series of events, performances and experiences inspired by Melville's Moby Dick. PETE has received support from RACC, The Oregon Arts Commission, The Oregon Cultural Trust, the Jackson Foundation, the Kinsman Foundation, the Princess Grace Foundation, the Oregon Community Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, the Network of Ensemble Theatres, Work for Art, PACLab, the Celebration Foundation and the Portland Theatre Civic Guild. PETE has been recognized by critics and audiences as "iconoclast", "exquisite", and "provocative".

PETE is Jacob Coleman, Rebecca Lingafelter, Cristi Miles, and Amber Whitehall, with Associate Artists Jenny Ampersand, Miranda K Hardy, Peter Ksander, Paige McKinney, Robert Quillen Camp, and Mark Valadez.
