Last night, April 29, The New York Pops marked its 30th birthday with a grand gala evening honoring the musical talents of songwriters Frank Loesser and Jule Styne, and the centennial of legendary entertainer Danny Kaye. STAGE TUBE: On This Day 4/14- GUYS AND DOLLS

Today in 1992, the second Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls opened at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre), where it ran for 1143 performances. Guys and Dolls is a musical with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. It is based on 'The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown' and 'Blood Pressure', two short stories by Damon Runyon, and also borrows characters and plot elements from other Runyon stories, most notably 'Pick the Winner'. Premiering on Broadway in 1950, the original production ran for 1200 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical has had several Broadway and London revivals, as well as a 1955 film adaptation starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine.

Guys and Dolls is a musical with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. It is based on 'The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown' and 'Blood Pressure', two short stories by Damon Runyon, and also borrows characters and plot elements from other Runyon stories, most notably 'Pick the Winner'. Today in 1959, The Most Happy Fella opened at City Center where it ran for 16 performances. With a book, music, and lyrics by Frank Loesser, the story isabout a romance between an older man and younger woman, is based on the play They Knew What They Wanted by Sidney Howard. The original Broadway production opened in 1956 and ran for 14 months. A 1992 revival, directed by Gerald Guttierrez, featured Spiro Malas as Tony, Sophie Hayden as Rosabella, Charles Pistone as Joe, Claudia Catania as Marie, Liz Larsen as Cleo, and Scott Waara as Herman.

MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts, himself newly married to Patrick Abner, performed a brief wedding ceremony at the Beach reception, which was attended by the grooms' mothers and about 100 friends and other family members. Broadway Producer-director Richard Jay-Alexander sang Frank Loesser's 'What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?' at the ceremony along with custom lyrics and we've got the footage.

Burrows wrote or directed such shows as Make a Wish, Two on the Aisle, Three Wishes for Jamie, Say, Darling, Guys and Dolls, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Cactus Flower, Four on a Garden, Can-Can, Silk Stockings, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Good News (1974 revival), and many others. With his collaborator Frank Loesser, Burrows won a Pulitzer Prize for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

TV: NBC Goes Broadway With HOW TO SUCCEED Themed Commercial!

During the Super Bowl today, February 5, NBC launched its "Brotherhood Of Man" network promo. Cast members of NBC shows including "Smash," "30 Rock," "Parks & Recreation," and "Parenthood" performed Frank Loesser's classic song from HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING. In the current smash hit Broadway revival of the musical comedy, international superstar Nick Jonas performs the tuneful anthem and Mr. Jonas will guest star on the Monday, February 27 episode of "Smash."
