The Typewriter Project is a series of interactive literary art installations—small, wooden shelters just big enough for a seat, desk, and typewriter—which invite passersby to join in a citywide linguistic exchange that takes both analog and digital forms. Each booth is outfitted with a vintage typewriter, 100-foot long paper scroll, solar generator, hidden tablet, and a custom-built USB typewriter kit, which allows every written entry to be collected, stored, and posted online for users to read, share, and comment upon. Acting as a public, community diary, each scroll captures something of the sound, narrative, and nuance of a specific corner of the city. The Typewriter Project's mission is to investigate, document, and preserve the poetic subconscious of the city while providing a fun and interactive means for the public to engage with poetry.

The New York Philharmonic's Spring Gala will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks, featuring a concert of music from iconic moments throughout the history of the free concert series, tonight, May 19, 2015, at 7:30 p.m.

Last week the National YoungArts Foundation took over Manhattan offering approximately 120 aspiring artists (actors, dancers, designers, cinematagraphers, musicians, photographers, singers, visual artists and writers, all ages 15 - 18) the life changing opportunity to participate in more than 50 master classes, as well as studio visits, workshops and tours. GRANVILLE, Ohio—Denison University announces the launch of its first Ensemble-in-Residence program, a collaboration between the Department of Music and the Vail Series. The Ensemble-in-Residence program will engage the entire campus and the greater community in an exploration of music and other academic disciplines. After two extensions, the Lincoln Center Theater's critically-acclaimed production of The City of Conversation ends its Off-Broadway run today. The City of Conversation was written by Anthony Giardina and directed by Doug Hughes. It originally opened on May 5.

It's easy for opera-lovers to complain about the homogenization of casting at the world's great houses—particularly when there's only a small handful of Annas, Jonases, Juan Diegos, Cecilias, etc., that everybody wants to hear. So it was a treat to hear the visiting Bolshoi's concert performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's THE TSAR'S BRIDE last weekend at Lincoln Center Festival—filled with wonderful solo voices almost completely unknown to New York audiences, along with the stalwart Bolshoi chorus (under Valery Borisov).

The Houston Grand Opera's brilliant production of Mieczyslaw Weinberg's THE PASSENGER, directed by David Pountney, was a stunning visitor to the Park Avenue Armory last week as a coproduction with the Lincoln Center Festival. It's not an easy experience, but well worth the effort.

Bernard Haitink will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct two weeks of performances highlighting works by Austrian composers - Berg, Webern, and Mahler - and Beethoven, who spent much of his career in Austria. In the first program, Mr. Haitink will conduct Webern's Im Sommerwind, Berg's Violin Concerto with Leonidas Kavakos, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, Eroica, tonight, May 8, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, May 9 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, May 10 at 8:00 p.m. Bernard Haitink's appearances are part of an international, season-wide celebration of the 60th anniversary of his conducting debut with the Netherlands Radio Union Orchestra (now the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra) and his 85th birthday.

When Shen Wei decided to present a season at the Judson Memorial Church, today, April 29-May 4, he faced a problem. This famed lover of the grand scale would not be able to hang his set for 'Map' performances, well, not if he wanted his audience seated on all four sides. However, Shen Wei Dance Arts' season, which also features the world premiere of a solo for the choreographer, shows that when there's a will, Shen Wei finds a way.
