A rarely seen portrait of one of the world's most celebrated writers, Roald Dahl, painted when he was a young RAF pilot during the Second World War by Matthew Smith, has gone on display at the National Portrait Gallery, it was announced today, Wednesday 6 August 2014. The portrait features in a new display bringing together, for the first time, the pioneering modernist work of painter Matthew Smith and sculptor Frank Dobson.

Capturing the imagination of young and old alike, the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical continues to play to packed houses at the Cambridge Theatre in London. Matilda has now been seen by almost 1.5million people since it transferred to the West End in October 2011. The production was commissioned by the RSC and played to sold-out audiences at the RSC's The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon for twelve weeks from November 2010 to January 2011. Tickets are now on sale until Sunday 24 May 2015.

Composed by OPERA San Antonio Artistic Director Tobias Picker, Fantastic Mr. Fox features a fox who will stop at nothing to keep his family safe. 'Fantastic Mr. Fox is full of tuneful arias and ensembles that you'll leave the theater humming,' says Picker. 'The Children's Chorus of Trees, featuring the Children's Chorus of San Antonio, watches over the antics of the Fox family and friends and the mean and selfish farmers, commenting like a Greek chorus. There is a soulful duet between Mr. Porcupine and Miss Hedgehog when they fall in love across a crowded room. And of course you'll see Mr. and Mrs. Fox lead the animal world in an elegant Fox Trot! I wrote this opera for children ages five through 115. There is humor and charm for every member of the family to enjoy. Today, MATILDA composer and lyricist Tim Minchin hosted a question and answer session on The Guardian website. Minchin discussed his appreciation of Roald Dahl, writing music, and his newest project: a stage adaptation of the Howard Ramis film 'Groundhog Day.'

Imagination Stage, in Bethesda, has scored yet another home run with its production of THE BFG, adapted by David Wood, OBE, from Roald Dahl's children's novel, and directed by Kathryn Chase Bryer and Eric J. Van Wyck. Parents will find themselves laughing along with their kids at Dahl's and Wood's irreverent humor, including an extended riff on the biologically impolite results of reversing the direction of the bubbles in soda pop. The more mature members of the audience will chuckle at the modern cultural references. This production is a must-see.

Building on the success of its inaugural Theater Series for Young Audiences, of which every performance was sold out, Marin Theatre Company will again partner with Bay Area Children's Theatre to present five productions in MTC's 99-seat Lieberman Theatre and 231-seat Boyer Theatre. Theater at Monmouth's Family Show opens June 28 at 7 p.m. with a world premiere production Tales from the Blue Fairy Book based on Andrew Lang's Blue Fairy Book. Adapted by Dawn McAndrews, Tales from the Blue Fairy Book bursts with classic tales from around the globe, including East of the Sun, West of the Moon; The Bronze Ring; The White Cat; and The Stars in the Sky.

Imagination Stage is the new home of Giant Country in The BFG (Big Friendly Giant), a play based on the book by Roald Dahl and adapted by David Wood. Co-directed by Imagination Stage's Associate Artistic Director Kathryn Chase Bryer and Eric J. Van Wyk of Viterbo University, The BFG integrates puppetry, rich visuals, and imaginative storytelling as Sophie and the Big Friendly Giant go on a magical journey to save the children of England.
