OPERA America, the national service organization for opera and the nation's leading champion for American opera, is pleased to announce that it has awarded grants to 11 opera companies through the Repertoire Development Grants program, supported by The Opera Fund. The Stella Adler Studio of Acting, in partnership with The Billie Holiday Theatre at RestorationART, today announced the first-ever Black Arts Theater Winter Immersion course, which will be taught by a world-class faculty in Brooklyn, New York, home to the largest Black community in the nation.

Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre (NBT) put the spotlight on Black excellence in the spirit of joy at the ninth annual TEER Spirit Awards Gala on Wednesday, June 14.

The Newark Black Film Festival (NBFF), the longest running festival of its kind in the United States, kicks off its 43rd season on June 28 at the Newark Museum with 13th, Ava DuVernay's exploration of the history of race, justice and mass incarceration in the U.S., focusing on the nation's prisons that are disproportionately filled with African-Americans.

The Hub City Jazz Festival and the Friends of Crossroads Theatre Company are partnering to present HIGHER GROUND, a musical celebration and fundraiser. This event will be held Friday March 31 at Crossroads Theatre to celebrate the company's thirty-nine year history of producing high quality work that celebrates the culture, history, spirit and voices of the entire African Diaspora.

A star-studded line up came out to experience the Billie Holiday Theatre's New York Premiere of Richard Wesley's  AUTUMN   over the weekend. Celebrities included  Denzel Washington,  Alicia Keys,  Spikeand  Tonya Lee,  Ted Lange,  John David Washington   and renowned theater icons, including  Stephen McKinley Henderson,  Woodie King   and  Anthony Chisholm.

In the mid-1970s, many artists and organizations successfully defied socially destructive policies and fought for the arts as a public good during New York City's near-bankruptcy and resulting austerity.

Segal Theatre Center, located at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, celebrates the publication of Hillary Miller's Drop Dead: Performance in Crisis, 1970s New York (Northwestern University Press), the Martin E. And it's free.
