Ron Magliozzi, who has organized over 50 film series and gallery exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art since 1993, has been promoted to Curator in the Department of Film. Having joined the staff in 1979 as a supervisor of MoMA's International Film Study Center, Magliozzi specializes in collections research, development, and acquisitions, and has held the position of Associate Curator since 2011. Pedro Almodovar will be honored with a major career retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art. Opening on November 29 with a special screening of Almodovar's latest work and 20th feature film, Julieta (2016), to be released nationally on December 21, the retrospective will include all 20 of the director's feature films, beginning with his first film Pepi, Luci, Bom, y otras chicas del monton (Pepi, Luci, Bom) from 1980. The Museum of Modern Art's 2016 Film Benefit, presented by CHANEL, will honor Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks on November 15. Winner of the 1993 and 1994 Best Actor Oscars for Philadelphia (1993) and Forrest Gump (1994), Mr. Hanks has also been nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award on three other occasions, for his roles in Big (1989), Saving Private Ryan(1999), and Cast Away (2001). Later this year, Mr. Hanks will star in the highly anticipated films Inferno (2016) and Sully (2016). The Film Benefit will be highlighted by a gala dinner and a tribute recognizing Mr. Hanks's acclaimed work. MoMA will also pay tribute to Mr. Hanks with a film series of his work, November 8 to 14 in the Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters. (more...)

The Museum of Modern Art presents a complete, mid-career retrospective of the films of Ira Sachs, a filmmaker who, in the course of seven features and five short films, has established himself as one of the singular voices in American cinema. From July 22 to August 3, Thank You for Being Honest: The Films of Ira Sachs will showcase the complete range of Sachs's intimate work, from experimental shorts to insightful social comedies to piercing autobiographical dramas, in the Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters. The series begins and ends with films that premiered with Sundance. Forty Shades of Blue (2005), which won the Sundance 2005 U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize, will open the retrospective. The film is the emotionally gripping story of an aging Memphis record producer, hard drinker, and cad (Rip Torn), and his relationships with his Russian girlfriend (Dina Korzun) and his son Michael (Darren Burrows). The July 22 screening will be followed by a Q&A with Sachs, conducted by Rajendra Roy, Celeste Bartos Chief Curator of Film at MoMA. The exhibition is organized by the Department of Film. (more...)

The Museum of Modern Art celebrates Italian cinema with two film series in December: Antonio Pietrangeli: A Retrospective (December 3-18, 2015), with long-term partner Luce Cinecitta, and Italian Film, 21st-Century Style: A Tribute to Rai Cinema (December 4-18, 2015). Exploring the director's career from the early 1950s to the mid-1960s, Antonio Pietrangeli will feature 11 feature films, from Pietrangeli's best-known work-including the international premiere of the restored version of I Knew Her Well (which will play in New York theaters from February 2016)-to a number of rediscoveries. The Museum of Modern Art announces that La Frances Hui will join the Museum as Associate Curator in the Department of Film, beginning October 13. In this role, Ms. Hui will serve as a strategic collaborator in driving the department's extensive calendar of programs, exhibitions, collections, and scholarship under the leadership of Rajendra Roy, the Museum's Celeste Bartos Chief Curator of Film. She joins MoMA following 15 years at the Asia Society in New York, where she served as Film Curator and Associate Director of Cultural Programs. During her tenure, she curated film series covering a wide spectrum of Chinese cinema, from silent classics to propaganda films to contemporary mainstream cinema and independent films. With expertise in a variety of Asian cinemas, she has also organized series featuring Japanese documentaries, New Wave Japanese cinema, contemporary Thai films, New Wave Iranian cinema, and popular Korean filmmaking.
