BWW Reviews: Cabrillo's SOUND OF MUSIC Is a Winner
by Don Grigware
- Jul 27, 2011
Perhaps the best known musical of all time - and perhaps the best - Rodgers' and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music has remained a family favorite since the 50s. Number one, the score is to die for; secondly, the book is dramatically fulfilling with a real life family being torn asunder by the ravages of fascism. Touches of real intertwined humor add to the appeal. Cabrillo Music Theatre, under the skillful eye of Lewis Wilkenfeld, is once again reviving the show, and the production is thoroughly worth your while, if for no other reason than to catch Shannon Warne's superior performance as Maria, and for some truly glorious singing.

by Kelsey Denette
- Jul 19, 2011
The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria, a young, aspiring but quirky nun who brightens the lives of the von Trapp children and captures the heart of their stern and lonely father. But, will their harmonious lives be torn apart when their beautiful homeland is ravaged by war? Rodgers and Hammerstein's Tony Award-winning musical delights audiences with the uplifting story and an irresistible score: 'Climb Every Mountain,' 'Do-Re-Mi,' 'Edelweiss' and 'My Favorite Things.'

BWW Reviews: THE SOUND OF MUSIC at Clarksville's Roxy Regional Theatre
by Jeffrey Ellis
- Jul 16, 2011
Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music could very well be the most-often viewed of the legendary duo's iconic works for the musical theatre, what with the seemingly endless parade of televised airings of the acclaimed 1965 film version, the frequent professional revivals of the stage show and, of course, the fondness for the piece exemplified by the multiple stagings in little theaters all over the world. The musical's lush score, its likable heroine, its vaguely historic (if largely inaccurate) retelling of a true story and all those fresh-faced youngsters singing 'Do-Re-Mi' have made The Sound of Music a favorite of musical theater fans since its 1959 debut on Broadway.

Could there possibly be a showtune more rousing than the eponymous 'Oklahoma!' from Rodgers and Hammerstein's historic musical - or an opening number more iconic or more easily identifiable than 'Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'? With lyrics and melodies so memorable that you're likely to find yourself singing along (perhaps even before you realize it!) anytime you hear them played, they are among the best-known songs in American musical theater.
