Aviva Players Open Season with 'Songs, Piano Rags & Chamber Music by Women Composers' Tonight

The Aviva Players will begin its 40th season tonight, October 16 with 'Songs, Piano Rags & Chamber Music by Women Composers, including the Piano Trio by Fanny Mendelssohn,' the first installment of a three-part concert series at Opera America, 330 Seventh Ave.  The concert will include piano rags by May Frances Aufderheide, Irene Giblin and Adeline Shepard; songs by Mira J. Spektor, and 'Vocal Duets' and 'The Piano Trio' by Fanny Mendelssohn.  The evening is presented in conjunction with Downtown Music Productions.

The Aviva Players, now in its 40th season, invites opera goers to travel into the past and future with its 'Double Feature of Chamber Opera Films' to be presented at Opera America, 330 Seventh Ave., Manhattan, on November 4. The films are 'Villa Diodati' a screen version of Mira J. Spektor's opera about Mary Shelley and the origins of her Frankenstein story, and 'Libertaria: the Virtual Opera' by Sabrina Pena Young, a futuristic animated tale that may be the world's first original machinima opera and is certainly one of the few animated comic book operas.

Gibson, Carol Hall, Anne Hamilton, Harriet Slaughter, Mira Spektor and Gayl Teller will be presented at the Cherry Lane Theatre tonight, October 29th at 7:30. Cara Reichel will direct. Melody Berger will provide incidental music.

The first funny feminist musical revue for men and women, THE HOUSEWIVES' CANTATA uses a cabaret style ? la 'Jacques Brel...' to tell the story of three women, one of whom goes from housewife to becoming the first woman President of the United States. Songs featured in the revue include 'What is a woman?,' 'Dirty dish rag,' 'Guinevere among the grapefruit peels,' 'Adultery waltz' and 'Divorce lament.'
