BWW Reviews: HotCity Theatre's Moody Production of ENTERTAINING MR. SLOANE
by Chris Gibson - Sep 13, 2013

Playwright Joe Orton's writing career was brief, ending abruptly when he was bludgeoned to death in 1967. In a very short span he wrote a handful of plays that are still being performed to this day, and one wonders what he would have created if he'd lived longer. You can catch one of his early plays at HotCity Theatre as they are currently presenting his darkly cynical work ENTERTAINING MR. SLOANE. A fine cast does a splendid job of bringing these peculiar characters to life.

BWW Reviews: The New Jewish Theatre's Engaging and Lively Production of SPEED THE PLOW
by Chris Gibson - Feb 8, 2013

I'm a big fan of the works of playwright David Mamet, and with his play, SPEED THE PLOW, he takes aim at the cutthroat world of Hollywood. It's a fascinating look at what sells and what doesn't when you're talking about the big screen. And, it also shows how friendships can be pushed to the brink by perceived betrayals. Marked by solid performances from the cast, the play is funny and telling in equal measure. The current production by The New Jewish Theatre is nicely constructed and executed, as well as providing ample food for thought.

BWW Reviews: The Rep's Must-See Production of CLYBOURNE PARK
by Chris Gibson - Nov 1, 2012

Playwright Bruce Norris has written a real gem with his work CLYBOURNE PARK. This is a wonderfully clever and often hilarious work that looks at racism from two different angles, each represented in acts that take place in the past and in the present, respectively. The current production by the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis is simply perfect, with expert direction and a fabulous cast. This is absolutely must-see theatre, and one, I dare say, that may have you coming back for repeat business.

BWW Reviews: The Rep Presents Excellent Production of THE INVISIBLE HAND
by Chris Gibson - Mar 14, 2012

When we think in terms of terrorism, we usually picture suicide bombings, and planes flying into the sides of buildings, but we rarely ponder the idea of socioeconomic terrorism. That's why the Rep's final Studio Theatre production is so compelling and brilliant; that possibility is brought to light in a crisply acted and paced 75 minute piece called THE INVISIBLE HAND written by playwright Ayad Akhtar. Superior acting and direction make this into a fascinating and revealing show, that will gives audiences plenty to think about as they leave the theatre.
