BWW Review: Compelling THE MOUNTAINTOP at Trinity Rep
by Andria Tieman
- Jan 18, 2017
THE MOUNTAINTOP by Katori Hall, reimagines Martin Luther King's last night in a Memphis hotel room with an unexpected amount of humor and some magical realism. It is daunting to take on the task of humanizing such a larger-than-life figure, but Joe Wilson Jr.'s portrayal is compelling, endearing and perfectly captures both the challenge and the pain that comes with being a public figure called to tackle a seemingly impossible task. This two-person production also stars Mia Ellis as Camae, the hotel maid who delivers coffee to King's room and who quickly becomes a friend and confidant. This is an intimate production that manages to avoid getting too preachy, delivering a night of excellent theatre.
BWW Review: Classic RAISIN IN THE SUN at Rep Spotlights How Far We Haven't Come
by Jay Irwin
- Oct 6, 2016
There are certain plays out there that remain enduring classics. Maybe they're just that good. Or maybe they still pack a punch all these years later and resonate with attitudes of today. Well the Seattle Rep is presenting one on those classics with Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun" and while it falls firmly into that first category of "just that good" unfortunately watching it last night I also felt how far we have and haven't come since it debuted in 1959 as many of the themes of inequality and prejudice on display are still all too prevalent today.

BWW Reviews: The Sidesplitting and Strange MELANCHOLY PLAY: A CHAMBER MUSICAL at Trinity Rep
by Andria Tieman
- Jun 4, 2015
Melancholy Play: A Chamber Musical, begins as one might expect-- with a song about being melancholy. Set in what looks like the aftermath of a New Year's eve party with gold tinsel strewn about the floor, and a sad, saggy banner on the back wall. Our five characters regale the audience a song of melancholy setting the audience up for a witty, if nonsensical 90 minutes.
