Photo Coverage: Luba Mason Brings MIXTURA to 54 Below
by Stephen Sorokoff - Apr 10, 2015

54 Below presented a special night with LUBA MASON - the Broadway star of Chicago, Jekyll & Hyde, The Capeman, among many others, last night and Broadwayworld was there. Fresh off the smash success of the Off-Broadway musical Pretty Flilthy - for which she was hailed as 'outstanding' by The New York Times, 'deliciously droll' by The Hollywood Reporter and 'straight up and affecting' by The New York Daily News - she will present an updated version of her concert Mixtura. Luba's trademarked blend of different musical currents, Mixtura is hybrid musical format consisting of various styles that can also be in any language. The 54 Below evening will include the work of diverse songwriters such as Van Morrison ('Moondance'), Cole Porter ('Love For Sale'), Kander & Ebb ('All That Jazz') and Lou Reed ('Pale Blue Eyes'), in addition to original songs from her Brazilian jazz album Krazy Love. Mixtura will also feature a special version of her breakout number 'Beautiful' by Michael Friedman from Pretty Filthy. You can watch the song 'In Performance' from The New York Times here. Previous incarnations of Mixtura were called 'powerful' by The Huffington Post and 'rapturous musical heaven' by Times Square Chronicles. The evening will feature musical director and arranger Felipe Fournier on vibes.

BWW #TBT CD Reviews: Luba Mason's COLLAGE and KRAZY LOVE are Delightfully Jazzy
by David Clarke - Apr 9, 2015

I'm late to the Luba Mason party. I first took notice of her when I attended a performance of The Civilians' PRETTY FILTHY, and I was impressed by her serenely sensual alto instrument. As she is prepping to take 54 Below by storm tonight with her cabaret show MIXTURA 2, I've been acquainting myself with her albums COLLAGE and KRAZY LOVE. Both are delightfully jazzy collections sure to add some spice to your life.

New Book of Interviews with Poet Gregory Corso is Released
by Christina Mancuso - Feb 11, 2015

After five years of research and editing, Rick Schober, publisher at Tough Poets Press (Arlington, MA), has announced the completion of 'The Whole Shot: Collected Interviews with Gregory Corso.' The 202-page book is a collection of 13 rare and out-of-print interviews with Beat poet Gregory Corso (1930-2001) that span the most productive years of his career: from 1955, when his first collection of poems was published, to 1982, the year following the publication of his last book of all new poetry. The foreword was written by Dick Brukenfeld, publisher of Corso's The Vestal Lady on Brattle and Other Poems (1955), and recounts the poet's early days in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and as a 'stowaway' on the Harvard University campus. Corso was the youngest of the inner circle of writers (along with Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William Burroughs) who were responsible for launching and popularizing the Beat movement in American literature. Two of Corso's earlier collections of poetry, Gasoline (1958) and The Happy Birthday of Death (1960), are considered to be groundbreaking works of twentieth-century American literature and yet, unlike the other major Beat writers, both he and his poetry are relatively unknown today. Among the works included in this collection are two pieces by humorist and syndicated newspaper columnist Art Buchwald, as well as an early interview by Victor Bockris, noted biographer of Lou Reed, Andy Warhol, Keith Richards, Patti Smith, Blondie, Muhammad Ali, and others. Advance reviews from eminent Beat literature scholars have praised 'The Whole Shot' as 'an important collection of interviews that provide a fascinating glimpse into the thoughts, writings and life of a Beat writer who deserves closer attention,' 'highly readable,' 'a valuable contribution to our understanding of an original and vigorous poetic voice,' and 'essential reading for anyone with an interest in Gregory Corso, the Beat Generation, or modern poetry.' To help defray the costs associated with self-publishing The Whole Shot, Schober has recently launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign which will run through March 26, 2015, which would have been Corso's eight-fifth birthday. Visit www.kickstarter.com/projects/1860098210/the-whole-shot-interviews-with-beat-poet-gregory-c for information on how to support this book project by pre-ordering a copy for as little as $15.
