Writer and actor Modesto 'Flako' Jimenez performs his autobiographical and uncompromising collection of poetry, Oye Para mi Querido Brooklyn (Listen For My Dear Brooklyn.) Hiding out in his abuelita's bathroom, Flako, a young Dominican man, escapes into the memories of losing his culture and self to the gentrified blocks of Bushwick. Oye For My Dear Brooklyn is performed in both English and Spanish through a series of poems, video projections, and music. Lyrical and savage, Flako's poetry is populated with immigrants, drug dealers, condoritos, tiguerasos, mothers and sons, all asking the same question, "What's my moral worth?"

The Bushwick Starr is proud to announce our 2016-17 Season of Programming. The Season begins with our developing work program, the Propeller Project, which this year introduces a new piece by eclectic performance artist, Shasta Geaux Pop, aka Ayesha Jordan (Enter & Exit, Living Room Dance Breaks). Our Main Stage shows feature an ambitious and exciting line-up of world premiers from: award-winning theater ensemble The Mad Ones (The Essential Straight & Narrow, The Tremendous Tremendous), celebrated downtown duo Kate Benson and Lee Sunday Evans (A Beautiful Day in November on the Banks of the Greatest of the Great Lakes), rising star playwright Phillip Howze(abominable, Tiny Boyfriend), and multi-media cult favorites Royal Osiris Karaoke Ensemble(Everything One in the Disc of the Sun). Our ongoing community events and festivals, Puppet Kitchen, Brooklyn Gypsies, and Big Green Theater, will continue to present new collaborative work geared towards our Bushwick neighborhood audience, including a multi-lingual partnership between playwright William Burke (Comfort Dogs, the food was terrible) and Modesto Flako Jimenez(Brooklyn Gypsies). And finally, our free Starr Reading Series will cultivate new plays in development from some of NYC's most exciting young playwrights.

To celebrate its 40th anniversary this season, Orchestra of St. Luke's (OSL) turned to works that have been favorites among its musicians and audiences as the starting point for its Chamber Music Series programs. For the season-opening concerts in late October at The Morgan Library & Museum and Brooklyn Museum, the genesis of the program was the Schubert Octet, a work beloved and frequently performed by St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble throughout its history.

Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, the renowned summer arts day camp which has introduced the arts to more than 60,000 children, presented a special on-campus workshop on Thursday April 24 from 8 AM to 12 Noon at the Maurice Hexter Center, titled "A Morning of Clarinet 2014." The unique event was attended by 45 clarinet students from several Suffolk County school districts, was taught by Liam Burke, an award-winning and fast-rising young clarinetist who has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Mostly Mozart Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke's and other major ensembles.

When the game turns deadly, how will you play? Steppenwolf for Young Adults' 2013/14 season asks this question with Nigel Williams's adaptation of William Golding's classic, Lord of the Flies. The Hypocrites Artistic Director Halena Kays stages the production in Steppenwolf's Upstairs Theatre, featuring William Burke, Spencer Curnutt, Lane Flores, Rudy Galvan, Ryan Heindl, Cale Manning, Brendan Meyer,Lance Newton, Ty Olwin, Kevin Quinn, Adam Shalzi and Dan Smeriglio. Ensemble ACJW Launches 2013-14 Season

Ensemble ACJW-an inspirational collective of young professional musicians who are fellows in a two-year program that supports them in building careers as top-quality performers, innovative programmers, and dedicated teachers-returns for its seventh year in the 2013-2014 season. Members of ACJW play music at the highest level, partner with New York City public school music teachers and classrooms throughout the school year, lead biannual residencies at Skidmore College, perform in a variety of community settings, and possess a strong commitment to professional development. Established in January 2007 by Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and the Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education, Ensemble ACJW reflects the belief that the artist of tomorrow will require both the ability to perform at the highest level and the capacity to give back to the community, inspiring the next generation of musicians and music lovers.
