BWW Reviews: Half and Half's CHICAGO Reinvigorates a Classic
by Jeff Davis - May 29, 2014

'Ladies and gentlemen, you are about to see a story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery, and treachery-all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts.' So begins the classic Kander and Ebb musical, Chicago. Of course, there are some other things that we hold near and dear to our hearts, such as pitch perfect voices, showy choreography, imaginative staging, and a good rum and coke. Thankfully, all are present and accounted for in Half and Half's current production of Chicago. Whether you've seen the show or the Oscar-winning movie before, you owe it to yourself to see this uniquely immersive production.

BWW Reviews: Vortex Rep's Original Musical SING MUSE is an Inspired and Clever Look at Mythology
by Jeff Davis - Aug 28, 2013

There are so many words and phrases in this world that shouldn't go together, such as a cappella and musical, modern theater and ancient Greek mythology, and Miley Cyrus and respectable young artist. While I have no clue what Vortex Rep thinks of Miley, it seems that where the rest of us see things that don't go together, the artists at Vortex Rep see a theatrical opportunity. Their latest production, an original a cappella musical inspired by Greek mythology, is exciting, imaginative, and-with a few minor tweaks here and there-could become a favorite of regional theaters across the country (and I consider Off-Broadway as a region, too).

BWW Reviews: Life is a CABARET at City Theatre Company
by Jeff Davis - Aug 24, 2012

"In here, life is beautiful," the Emcee deviously purrs to the audience at the start of CABARET, now playing at Austin's City Theatre Company. Though he is referring to Berlin's seedy Kit Kat Klub, the same can be said of The City Theatre. In here, life is many things: clever, engrossing, and always beautiful, even when the proceedings turn dark and sinister.

BWW Reviews: THE SOUND OF MUSIC Soars in Austin's Zilker Park
by Jeff Davis - Jul 31, 2012

The Sound of Music, the final collaboration of Musical Theater Gods Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, is quite possibly their most popular and most famous; judging by the current production by Zilker Theatre Productions it's easy to see why. The Sound of Music is a classic crowd-pleaser that the entire family can enjoy and appreciate.
