The Joffrey Academy of Dance, Official School of The Joffrey Ballet, has announced the winners of the third annual Choreographers of Color Award: Justin Allen, Stefanie Batten Bland and Norbert De La Cruz III. This announcement follows a national call for artists to submit applications, which began in July.

The 45th anniversary season of the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company provided a glimpse into Lar Lubovitch's prolific career as a dance maker, showcasing both well-known and new works. Program B, presented at The Joyce Theater from October 15-20, featured a variety of pieces that emphasize Lubovitch's talent for using several distinctive movement themes to create a wide variety of atmospheres and characters.

Lately, all my conversations about dance return to one question: who is making new, exciting, and unique contemporary dances. It's true, we've all been jaded by So You Think You Can Dance, as well as the abundance of contemporary modern companies with beautiful, but nonetheless, gooey movement. Lar Lubovitch's program last Friday night at the Joyce was everything you would expect from contemporary dance-a little bit of floor work, a little bit of partnering, a modern torso with ballet legs and a cast of technical, and athletic dancers. However, Lar Lubovitch did deliver entertaining concepts and wonderful music for the audience.

Nominated for Tony, Emmy, and Grammy awards, Lar Lubovitch has been cited by The New York Times as "one of the ten best choreographers in the world," and his New York City-based dance company has been called a "national treasure" by Variety. Lar Lubovich Dance Company will perform a mixed-rep program, including a performance of Lubovitch's 2011 Crisis Variations, which features a score by UT Associate Professor in Composition Yevgeniy Sharlat. Crisis Variations will be performed to live music by UT faculty ensemble D-Tack under the direction of conductor Ransom Wilson.

Curtains up! AIR TWYLA propels Pacific Northwest Ballet into its new season with a trio of works by its first artist-in-residence, renowned choreographer Twyla Tharp. The program includes the world premiere of Waiting at the Station with a commissioned score by New Orleans music legend Allen Toussaint. Stephen Pier has achieved a uniquely rich and varied career as a dancer, teacher, and choreographer. His credits as a performer include many years with the Jose Limon Dance Company where the New York press hailed him as '...one of the most gifted dancers on the modern dance scene today.' He went on to become a leading soloist with the Hamburg Ballet in Germany, performing the title roles in John Neumeier's Othello and Saint Matthew's Passion, and creating numerous other major roles during his nine years with the company. As a member of the Royal Danish Ballet for six years, Mr. Pier had the privilege of dancing leading roles in works of Bournonville, Balanchine, MacMillan, Bejart, and collaborating with many of Europe's finest contemporary choreographers.
