Colburn School Honors Valery Gergiev, Elizabeth Segerstrom And Yasuhisa Toyota At Celebrate Colburn Gala

At its gala event, Celebrate Colburn, the Colburn School will honor renowned conductor Valery Gergiev, philanthropist Elizabeth Segerstrom, and acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota with the Richard D. Colburn award for their exemplary achievements and contributions to classical music and the performing arts in Los Angeles and throughout the world. Celebrate Colburn takes place at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at 7 p.m., followed by a post-performance dinner hosted at the School.

Pianist Lang Lang all but disappeared from the concert stage late last year while recovering from an arm injury caused by intensely rushed practice of Ravel's concerto for left hand only. Now back touring, he was the main draw for the opening of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra's 2018-19 season. His performance proved all is well and why he is one of the few superstar classical-music attractions. With less flamboyance, conductor Edo de Waart confirmed his formidable international reputation is also deserved, and the orchestra responded with passion to his authoritative direction.

The Cleveland Orchestra announced today that the 2018 100th Anniversary Gala held on Saturday, September 29 raised - for the fifth year in a row - more than one million dollars. This year's Cleveland Orchestra Gala raised a record-breaking $1,750,000, thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the sponsors, patrons, and long-time supporters, as well as the leadership of Gala Chair Norma Lerner; co-chair Nancy W. McCann; corporate co-chair, KeyBank Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Beth E. Mooney; and corporate co-chair, Cleveland Orchestra Board President Richard K. Smucker. The Gala has nearly doubled the annual revenue in the last six years. The Cleveland Orchestra Gala supports the Orchestra's education and community programs which share the value and joy of music with people throughout Northeast Ohio, enriching the quality of life for all members of our community.

Nanna Øland Fabricius, known to fans around the world as the artist Oh Land, wrote and produced her first album, Fauna in 2008, which was released to much critical acclaim. Recorded mostly by herself in her bedroom, Fabricius discovered an early knack for production. The album was released in 2018 digitally and on CD, but never on vinyl... until Now. On November 10th, 2018 it will finally be released on a luxurious light blue 180g vinyl, packaged in a gatefold cover and accompanied by a 16-page booklet. The young Romanian pianist Daniel Ciobanu will be presented in solo recital by the American Friends of the Arthur Rubinstein International Music Society, Thursday evening, October 18, 2018, 7 pm at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall (154 W 57th St, New York, NY 10019). Mr. Ciobanu was awarded the Second Prize and Audience Favorite Prize at the 2017 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in Tel-Aviv, Israel; his program will include works by Enescu, Mussorgsky, Scriabin, and Stravinsky.

The Juilliard School today announced that alumnus Wynton Marsalis, trumpeter, director of Juilliard Jazz Studies, and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, will address the graduates at the school's 113th commencement ceremony, which takes place Friday, May 18, 2018, at 11am in Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. Mr. Marsalis received an honorary doctor of music degree from Juilliard in 2006. This will be the final commencement for Juilliard President Joseph W. Polisi, who has had a long association with Mr. Marsalis and asked that he be the commencement speaker. In July, Damian Woetzel will begin as the school's seventh president.
