BSO Offers Family Concert Honoring African-American Innovators Today

In celebration of Black History Month, Associate Conductor for Education and Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras Artistic Director Ken Lam leads the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in a Family Concert Series program celebrating African-American Innovators, today, February 21 at 11 a.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Featuring the music of Duke Ellington and Heitor Villa-Lobos, the Baltimore City College Choir led by Director Marcus Smith, lends their voices for a collection of African-American spirituals, honoring the impact of innovation on our collective history. Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly leads the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in performances of Singin' in the Rain,Thursday, March 26, at 8 p.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore and Friday, March 27, at 8 p.m., Saturday, March 28, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, March 29, at 3 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Ranked by the American Film Institute (AFI) as the No. 1 movie musical of all time, Singin' in the Rain stars Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds, and features a lighthearted portrayal of iconic dance and memorable songs, including "Make 'em Laugh," "Fit as a Fiddle" and more. The film will be projected on a large screen above the Orchestra while Maestro Everly leads the BSO in the moving classic score. Please see below for complete program details.

Patti Austin Performs with the BSO This Weekend

Grammy and Oscar award-winning vocalist Patti Austin returns to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for a performance devoted to the brilliance of Washington, DC native Duke Ellington and 'The First Lady of Song,' Ella Fitzgerald, tonight, February 19 at 8 p.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore, and Friday, February 20 at 8 p.m. Saturday, February 21 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, February 22 at 3 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Led by Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly, Ms. Austin joins the Orchestra for such legendary jazz classics as 'Cottontail,' 'I Got It Bad,' 'It Don't Mean a Thing' and more.

BSO to Perform All-Mozart Program, 3/12-14

One of the world's leading 18th-century music specialists, Japan's Masaaki Suzuki, makes his Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) debut leading the Orchestra in an all-Mozart program, Thursday, March 12 at 8 p.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore, and Friday, March 13 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, March 14 at 8 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Featuring the composer's Don Giovanni Overture and Violin Concerto No. 5, performed by young German violinist Augustin Hadelich, the concert culminates with Mozart's Mass in C minor, otherwise known as the 'Great' Mass. One of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's (BSO) favorite guest conductors, Yan Pascal Tortelier returns to the podium to lead the Orchestra in Stravinsky's The Firebird Suite on Friday, February 27 at 8 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and Saturday, February 28 at 8 p.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore. Also on the program are Berlioz's Le Corsaire overture ('The Pirate'), Ravel's Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello and Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23, performed by pianist Louis Lortie, hailed by many as an authority on the music of Mozart.
