BWW Reviews: New American Theatre's Consummate I NEVER SANG FOR MY FATHER
by Don Grigware - Jun 1, 2011

Fathers and sons, whether a fit or a mismatch, forever struggle in some manner, opening up endless dramatic possibilities. Robert Anderson's memorable play I Never Sang For My Father (1968) depicts an iron-willed, unyielding patriarch in his declining years. Tom Garrison (Philip Baker Hall), a former mayor and member of the Rotary Club, was a pillar of the community and, sadly enough, revered as a model of male perfection. Not unlike many men of his era, he was a self-made man, who rose out of poverty and was proud of it, but quick to judge others' faults particularly those of his own father and his children, causing a rift and, in one case, permanent alienation. With senility setting in, Garrison prefers to stand alone rather than accept the support and care of his son Gene (John Sloan), who tries desperately to love him. The New American Theatre's current production may stand the test of time as the quintessential representation of this classic tragedy of a father/son relationship.

BWW Reviews: SCR Debuts Witty 'SILENT SKY'
by Michael L. Quintos - Apr 19, 2011

Set against the interesting backdrop of flowing petticoats in a sea of celestial dots of light, Lauren Gunderson's charmingly lyrical new play SILENT SKY is now enjoying a fully-staged World Premiere production at South Coast Repertory through May 1. With a penchant for subtle wit and sincerely earnest dialogue, Gunderson has attempted a nicely-crafted 'work-in-progress' that gives us a headstrong heroine nerd to root for from America's little-known historical margins.

A Midsummer Night's Dream is a feast of midsummer madness, mischievous fairies, mismatches lovers and musical merchants colliding hilariously in one of Shakespeare's most madcap and accessible comedies. This web of magic in the Athenian woods casts a powerful, pleasing spell on audiences of all ages.

BWW Reviews: Reprise Opens 14th Season with Vibrant SONG
by Don Grigware - Oct 1, 2010

It's the late 70s. Oversized mockup stereo speakers adorn both sides of the Freud stage as part of the set for They're Playing Our Song. At opening curtain Jason Alexander enters, not to start the scene, but to give the downbeat as conductor of the overture. The back part of the set that serves as a window and skyline of New York City converts to a screen and the audience is treated to a retrospective slide show of 70s pop culture. Redford and Newman, Sonny and Cher, Lee Majors and Farrah, Ron Howard and Henry Winkler as Fonzie, Charlie's Angels...the list goes on. A fun and flavorful beginning to a wonderfully nostalgic evening of theatre that marks the first production of Reprise's 14th season.
