Berkshire Opera Festival Launches with MADAMA BUTTERFLY

Berkshire Opera Festival launches its inaugural season this summer with a production of Giacomo Puccini's MADAMA BUTTERFLY at the historic Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, Massachusetts (August 27, 30, and September 2 at 7:30pm). BOF will offer a welcome return of locally produced opera to the long-time classical music hub.

Children's Musical Theater San Jose (CMT San Jose), a nationally acclaimed theater company honored 10 times by the NEA and the oldest operating performing arts organization in San Jose, now in its 48th year, presents the Tony Award-winning musical Rent, the final show in the 2015-2016 Mainstage series. Great stories give voice to great music - and the musical connection between Broadway and Opera has long fascinated and entertained audiences. In 1900 the theatrical success of David Belasco's play “Madame Butterfly: A Tragedy of Japan” led to Giacomo Puccini's 1904 grand opera “Madama Butterfly,” which re-emerged in 1988 as David Henry Hwang's Broadway hit and Tony Award winning play “M. Butterfly. “ When Jonathan Larson's musical “Rent” opened in 1996 to rave reviews, audiences and critics loved the homage to Puccini's “La Boehme.”

Today in 1996, Rent opened at the Nederlander Theatre, where it ran for 5123 performances. Rent is a rock musical with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson based on Giacomo Puccini's opera La boheme. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.On Broadway, Rent gained critical acclaim and won a Tony Award for Best Musical among other awards. The Broadway production closed on September 7, 2008 after a 12-year run.

Today in 1991, Miss Saigon opened at the Broadway Theatre, where it ran for 4092 performances. Miss Saigon is a musical by Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil, with lyrics by Boublil and Richard Maltby, Jr. It is based on Giacomo Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly, and similarly tells the tragic tale of a doomed romance involving an Asian woman abandoned by her American lover. The musical premiered at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in London on 20 September 1989, closing after over four thousand performances, on 30 October 1999.The musical represented Schonberg and Boublil's second major success, following Les Miserables in 1985.

Opera Santa Barbara's 22nd season will conclude in grand style with a pair of Giacomo Puccini's great one-act operas, the heart-warming Suor Angelica and the comic farce Gianni Schicchi, at the historic Granada Theatre on April 22 and 24.
