After reading far too many obituaries claiming, while not exactly mourning, the death of the Broadway musical, insisting that the art form can only be revived by injections of the kind of music that appeals to today's young audiences, I decided to take a night off from cabarets and piano bars a couple of Sundays ago to see what kind of songs were going to save the hallowed grounds of Gershwin, Porter and Rodgers.

On Sunday, August 29, If It Only Even Runs A Minute 3 played Le Poisson Rouge. The concert was the third edition of an evening of rare and inspiring songs, anecdotes, and photos from Broadway musicals that may not have been fully appreciated the first time around. East of Doheny has announced that it will present an invitation-only reading of the new screwball musical comedy My Man Godfrey on Friday, March 6, 2009. The musical, based on the book by Eric Hatch and the Universal Pictures film starring Carole Lumbard and William Powell, features music and lyrics by Tony Award-winner Mark Hollmann (Urinetown, The Musical) and book by Tony Award-winner Rupert Holmes (Curtains, The Mystery by Edwin Drood). Matthew August (Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas) directs.

An invitation-only staged reading of the new play UNDER MY SKIN will be presented January 26th at 3 p.m. at Ripley Grier Studios 520 Eighth Avenue 16th Floor, New York, NY. The New York premiere reading of Robert Sternin and Prudence Fraser's outrageous new comedy about 'sex cancer and the health care business' is being produced by Heather Provost ( [title of show], reasons to be pretty, 'Reality Check') after a successful reading in Los Angeles. Best known for their many successes as writer/producers for network television, Sternin and Fraser have written shows for CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX and the WB, producing hundreds of episodes of primetime television. They have also created and developed over a dozen series. Credits include 'Alice,' 'Three's Company,' 'Who's the Boss?' 'The Charmings,' 'Married People,' 'Live-In,' 'The Simple Life,' 'Run of the House,' and 'The Nanny,' which they co-created and executive produced with series star Fran Drescher. Sternin and Fraser recently collaborated with Hall of Fame songwriter Jeff Barry on the stage musical The Girl Who Would Be King, which premiered at the Granada Theater in Santa Barbara and went on to be seen at the Stamford Center for the Arts and Riverside Theater in Vero Beach, Florida.

'Love, Perfect, Change' To Close 7/27

I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE is set to close on Sunday, July 27 at the Westside Theatre. The production will have played a total of 5,003 performances and 20 previews, making it the second longest-running musical in Off-Broadway history after 'The Fantasticks.'

Although the show normally doesn't play on Thursdays, there will be a special Valentine's Day performance added on Thursday, February 14 at 8PM.
