East of Doheny has announced that it will present an invitation-only reading of the new screwball musical comedy My Man Godfrey on Friday, March 6, 2009. The musical, based on the book by Eric Hatch and the Universal Pictures film starring Carole Lumbard and William Powell, features music and lyrics by Tony Award-winner Mark Hollmann (Urinetown, The Musical) and book by Tony Award-winner Rupert Holmes (Curtains, The Mystery by Edwin Drood). Matthew August (Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas) directs.

Actors appearing in the presentation include Michael Buchanan, Jason Danieley, Diana DiMarzio, Sara Jean Ford, Joy Hermalyn, Troy Britton Johnson, Daniel Marcus, Jan Maxwell, Brianne Moore, Brad Oscar, Brynn O'Malley, Jill Paice, Jennifer Perry, Aaron Ramey, Ryan Silverman, Todd Thurston, Frank Vlastnik, and Stephanie Youell.

Set in depression-era New York, My Man Godfrey highlights the economic gap between the rich and the poor. The musical revolves around a wildly rich and eccentric family (the Bullocks) and the ‘forgotten man' (Godfrey), they hire as their butler straight from his home at the city dump. As the Bullock's dazzling, younger daughter (Irene) finds herself falling for the distinguished Godfrey, her once upper-crust family find themselves losing their riches.
