Just as the sweeping hills of Serenbe return to their verdant glory, and the flowers take bloom, the players of Serenbe Playhouse emerge with their playful interpretation of the 1965 classic Man of La Mancha. The Suzi Bass Awards, Inc. revealed nominations for the 2013-2014 Atlanta professional theatrical season this evening to theatre patrons and industry artists. The Suzi Nomination Party, which rotates venues, was hosted this year by Actor's Express in the King Plow Arts Center of Atlanta. Guest announcers included performers Christy Baggett, Laura Cole, Danielle Deadwyler, and Tess Malis Kincaid.

Playwright Carey Crim has a great talent for digging deep and exposing the many different layers of her characters. In Wake, her main character, an undertaker, is agoraphobic and attempting to recover from the death of her husband. She struggles to find a sense of self-worth, independence and freedom within her relationships with her mother and her teenage daughter and to accept a new love interest. In her world premiere Conviction, there's an even more critical issue facing its protagonists. Tom Hodges (Tom Astor), a high-school teacher in New Jersey, is accused of improper conduct with a female student, convicted and sent to prison for four years for a crime he may or may not have committed. His devastating struggle after release from prison is at the core of the play: a struggle to find a job and more urgently, self-worth through maintaining his relationships with his wife Leigh (Elyse Mirto), teenage son Nicholas (Daniel Burns) and friends Bruce and Jayne Wagner (Joseph Fuqua and Julie Granata), all of whom have been deeply affected by his supposed crime, some far worse than others. The friends represent only a small fraction, to be sure, of the negativity from the community at large. Heartbreaking though it is, each character must come to terms with what has happened and try to move on. The intense emotional layers that Crim unravels from all of them is astounding. Now onstage at the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura, Conviction boasts taut direction from Scott Schwartz and a superlative five-member ensemble, through September 28 only.

Cape May Stage tackles intense family dynamics with Other Desert Cities by Jon Robin Baitz. A finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this depiction of a family with deeply oppositional political views is a stirring reminder of the depth of family ties.

Bay Street Theatre's world premiere of CONVICTION, begins tonight, May 27, continues through June 15, and is by Carey Crim and directed by Scott Schwartz, Bay Street's new Artistic Director. The production is co-produced by Bay Street Theatre, Rubicon Theatre in California, Dead Posh Productions, London and Canada's Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. The 'Pay What You Can' performance will be on May 27 at 7 pm. 'PWYC' tickets are limited and will be available at the Box Office beginning at 2 pm on May 27. In Stage Door Players' production of the now-classic musical GODSPELL, gone are the hippie clowns and folky numbers that have been synonymous with the show for the past four decades. In their place is a high-octane, frenetically-paced explosion of talent. While there is still a sense of the original clown motif, that has been tweaked along with the book, score, and arrangements. Stage Door's production is a regional premiere of the 2012 Broadway Revival script that modernized the songs' arrangements, added a tune from the film version ('Beautiful City'), and made other nips and tucks. If you are a long-time GODSPELL devotee, as I am, there will be little touches that you miss; chief among them Jesus' now-absent Superman T-shirt; but Stage Door's infectiously talented cast nearly makes up for a handful of issues in the original material and some rather glaring directorial missteps.

The show opens tonight, May 16, 8pm curtain, and runs until June 5. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 8pm, and Sundays at 2:30pm. There are also two Thursday evening performances: May 29 and June 5, at 8pm.
