Although both Russell and Hicks are clearly at the top of their game with their exquisite performances, - honed from years of experience in the theatre and underscored by their shared joie de vivre and their obvious understanding of the text - the rest of the ensemble are an uneven lot of veterans and neophytes and those in between. While there are moments of bliss to be found in the production, glimmers of the promise that is surely to be found, there remains a lack of passion and what results is a didactic presentation that fails to inspire.

West Coast Premiere of PO BOY TANGO hits East West Players, 11/11

East West Players (EWP), the nation's premier Asian American theatre, continues its 44th season, themed Art Is..., with the west coast premiere of PO BOY TANGO, by Kenneth Lin. This production will be directed by the artistic director of The Chance Theater in Orange County, Oanh Nguyen. It will bring back to the EWP stage two of EWP's veteran actors, Jeanne Sakata and Dennis Dun and introduce African American actress Cece Antoinette.

Orange County's Chance Theater presents the West Coast Premiere of Richard Nelson's adaptation of THE SEAGULL by Anton Chekov, which continues through October 25. The production is directed by Tony Vezner, Assistant Professor of Theatre at Irvine's Concordia University and director of the Chance's 2008 critically-acclaimed production of Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol. As one of the great works in the history of the theatre, THE SEAGULL is one of the most prolifically-produced plays in the world. From the original, famed production at Konstantin Stanislavski's Moscow Art Theatre in 1898 to the recent landmark revival in New York's Central Park, THE SEAGULL has enchanted and engaged audiences from across the world for the last 100 years.

Chance Theater Receives 6 Ovation Nods; HAIR Celebrated

The Chance Theater has received six 2009 Ovation Award nominations from Los Angeles Stage Alliance: five nominations for HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, and one nomination for Best Season, a new category whose other nominees include Geffen Playhouse, Rubicon Theatre Company, Troubadour Theater Company, and Fountain Theatre. They are the only theater from Orange Country to receive recognition by the awards committee.

Germanacos will be replacing Kevin Vortmann. Rounding out the five-member cast are Glenn Seven Allen, Gia McGlone, Dominique Plaisant, and Trisha Rapier.
